    Upper Management? What Upper Management?

Sep 29, 2020 - Software Engineer II in Madison, WI

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Some very smart and tech savy engineers, opportunities to learn, full stack opportunities, trendy tech stack (some teams), WFH flexibility

    Cons

Below market salary, basic benefits, no bonuses, difficult to get annual increases, below average parental leave, upper management as a whole, policies inherited from Enterprise (parent company) which hinder ability to recruit quality engineers, incredibly high turnover, somehow there isn't clear criteria about career progression still, which is insane..... old school corporate mentality masquerading as a "tech company" which leads to product management group hindering engineers' ability to grow. Saving the best 'con' for last - would rather hire dozens of contractors or new employees than give existing employees raises to keep them from leaving.

stepping stone to bigger and better things

    Sep 1, 2020 - Software Engineer II

    Pros

Some talented engineers to work with, nice facilities (depending on location-Madison office is super nice, St. Louis is not, not sure about Anaheim), WFH flexibility, trendy tech stack (depending on which team). There's a lot to learn if you lack experience, great place to build your resume.

    Cons

Salary is not market competitive. This is not just my opinion or the numerous talented engineers who have left before me for higher pay and more PTO, they literally brought in a third party market analysis research firm to conduct a year long analysis ending in 2020 for salaries, benefits, and perks. All three areas were deemed "below markets". Markets in plural because of the three office locations (St. Louis, MO, Madison, WI, and Anaheim, CA) were all deemed below market. There are no year end bonuses, which doesn't help. PTO is abysmal. Doesn't matter if you are hired with 10+ years of experience and half a dozen weeks of prior vacation or a newly grad, EVERYONE starts out at 17 days of combined vacation and choicetime days. Paternal leave is also substantially below market. Salary bands and PTO policy are inherited from the parent company, so that's why. Upper management loves to express how "Entegral is an IT Software Development company, separate from its parent company which is not an IT Software Development company." (choosing not to say who is the parent company but you can easily find it on entegral's website). However, for the several years Entegral has been under its parent company...the salary, benefits, and PTO policies are the exact same as that parent company. Madison office has an incredibly tough time attracting engineers for this reason, and an even tougher time retaining talent. From what I heard, the same can be said from the St. Louis team. About 80% of the St. Louis team's engineers, from what I remember as of early 2020, were poached from the parent company because they couldn't attract or compete with other companies in the market. Don't know about Anaheim's engineering group. Work wise, you will certainly encounter the political and bureaucracy-styled product management culture. Most of management transferred from the parent company, hence that style. If you're used to it or consider your pay worth putting up for, then stay. But if not, then this isn't the place for you. You will be told "your voice matters", but at the end of the day, your voice goes through one ear and out the other of those who actually make the decisions.

    Pros

Good people to work with, fun atmosphere.

    Cons

Some of the people are very knowledgeable for the roles they are in. The upper management talks about others behind their backs. They seem to be stuck in start-up mode without any growth or going forward. Night deploys - They expect deploy team to report the day of the deploy - they deploy at 10pm, expect the deploy team to work through the night, and report the next day to work. Their deploys never go smoothly, always have problems - no proper testing.

    Growing startup

    Pros

The technology the teams are using is cutting edge and helps them create best in class software. Everyone has a voice to provide feedback and ideas. Employees are provided feedback regularly and given opportunities to improve in areas where they have opportunities. Management is thin, which provides autonomy. We have fun while working.

    Cons

The health care benefits aren't comparable. The vacation time isn't negotiable, at all, period. Every time "corporate" comes to town, things change.

    ARMS Business Solutions

Aug 28, 2017 - Engineer III in Madison, WI
    Recommend

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Excellent technical leadership from architects and senior/lead engineers. Good work/life balance with option to work on a flex schedule (9-hour days M-Thurs, then either every other Friday off or every Friday afternoon off). Feels like a startup in terms of growth and company culture, but supported by a large multinational corporation. Appropriate mix of well-established and cutting edge technologies.

    Cons

You must be willing to live and breathe agile development/project management which means priorities can change quickly sometimes.
