I have been working at Environmental Corporation of America full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The work is interesting. Daily research and reporting on things like threatened and endangered species, wetlands, cultural resources, soils, topo maps, aerial photos. Cool stuff if your into it. Lots of technical writing and map making and researching. Entry-level employees learn to be independent and accountable for everything from technical analysis, regulations, and reporting to project, client, and budget management...

    Cons

Work load can be heavy for everyone at times, making it hard to get/give lots of instruction. Mistakes are made by younger employees mostly due to lack of oversight, but senior staff are pretty swamped such that they don't have lots of time for mentoring. The work is very deadline driven, adding stress to an already detailed filled job, but if you can stick it out, you get much more efficient and find what works for you...

I worked at Environmental Corporation of America

    Pros

Fast paced, and you learn a lot

    Cons

There is no training at all, or guidance. Even though I was hired at an entry level I was expected to know everything by second day and if I got something incorrect I was severely scolded. Even though it was something that I don’t know how to do and no one would show me, again no training or willingness to help. You are severely over worked, and expected to stay late every day. Everyone is over worked and stressed to...

    Advice to Management

Actually care, the turn over rate would be lower if you actually care about your employees. People don’t leave because of companies they leave because of employers.

I have been working at Environmental Corporation of America

    Pros

I love the people that I work with, and even though the job is not easy (and there are some folks not suited to the demand of the job) I know I make a difference every day and that people are counting on me and I am always learning something new. My brain hurts some days, but I love the fast paced nature of the work and always juggling things.

    Cons

High volume of work. Sometimes it's very hard or impossible to keep up with the pace and learning every little detail for each project and each state and each reviewer is a challenging, so you have to be organized or have a crazy good memory. You also have to have thick skin and not take redlines or feedback personal since again there is a lot to learn and fast.

    Advice to Management

More training (although there's been a big increase in this) and finding good people to bring in who will like this work and quick/high pressure work environment. It's really apparent when someone isn't keeping up or does not have the skillsets, and they can become disgruntled because they think it's the company's fault even though it's just the nature of the work primarily. No one's perfect, but better hires would help...

I worked at Environmental Corporation of America full-time

    Pros

A lot of cool people to work with on staff level, very entertaining lunches and jokes. Free popcorn/lunch and breakfast periodically and free soda and coffee

    Cons

Way more cons than pros. First off, no formal or organized onboarding/training process. They literally tell you to look at an example and copy that and you have to teach yourself almost everything because no one else is available to the extent they need to be to teach new people. While it has been a busy season, they need to designate one or two people for the point of training. However, they wouldn't need to if the turnover...

    Advice to Management

Please incorporate a formalized training process. It's unprofessional to hire people and just throw them in and let them fend for themselves. And then when new employees make mistakes you get upset even though it could have easily been avoided with good training. Work on increasing employee morale, if you're going to swamp staff level with work, compensation needs to be a reflection of that. Furthermore, hire those who...

I worked at Environmental Corporation of America full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

The anguish and terrible work conditions at ECA motivated me to look elsewhere.

      Cons

Please do not apply to ECA unless you’ve exhausted all other options! ECA has many issues it needs to deal with and listed below is just a short list of those issues. No training. New employees are not offered training and instead are offered a walk through book. Needs an HR department. ECA needs a legitimate HR department so that employees can report the abuses of the company. Upper management create a hostile...

      Advice to Management

The morale, management, and respect is a trickle down effect and therefore needs to begin at the top of the company. The current company morale and staff turnover is a reflection of bad leadership.

I worked at Environmental Corporation of America

      Pros

There are some great people working there.

      Cons

This is absolutely the worst job I have ever had. Do not work here unless you like being miserable or are extremely desperate. Just a few negatives of working at ECA: writing the same boring reports, upper management always looking to throw someone under the bus, upper management with attitude problems, unreasonable due dates for reports, lots of working overtime during busy periods, no work flexibility, expensive health...

      Advice to Management

Management needs to listen to employees and turn things around or this company will go under. Treat employees like people and not report producers.

I have been working at Environmental Corporation of America for more than 2 years

      Pros

Getting to travel and see all parts of the country is great, and there is a lot of exposure to different areas, so I am never bored or doing the same thing over and over. Great opportunity to learn other skills handling clients and learning to manage budgets and other project management areas I don't think I'd get at a larger company. Overall a great opportunity to learn a lot of skills.

      Cons

Sometimes it gets really busy and there is a lot of demand to still complete things on time, but most everyone works well together so that helps. Projects are constantly changing and clients are always changing things, so if you are not good at pivoting or juggling multiple things at once it can be frustrating at times.

      Advice to Management

Team building events would be nice, especially during really busy spurts to keep spirits afloat. The cookout is always fun, it would be nice to have more of that. More formal training on things would help people learn quicker too.

I worked at Environmental Corporation of America

      Pros

They give out free candy and offer and absurd amount to junk food. Everyone is extremely dramatic and that can be hilarious to watch

      Cons

Very toxic work environment. Everyone gains weight. Senior staff don't really do anything. They want to reach big business level but don't offer any benefits to offset the amount of work that goes into that

      Advice to Management

Think about project level staff and what you can do to retain them
