I have been working at Environmental Defense full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Very outcome oriented, challenging yet also supportive. Cares about you as a person as well. Competitive culture, but in a good way. People want to do well and get the support they need to do well.

    Cons

No clear path for advancement usually; mapping a career path over the long term is not obvious. Kinda big, so feels a bit like you can get lost. Making progress on diversity, but needs to do more.

  2. "Great NGO, team-specific experience"

I have been working at Environmental Defense full-time

    Pros

I enjoy working with really intelligent and thoughtful people everyday

    Cons

salary compensation is low for entry level employees

    Advice to Management

By paying lower level employees and investing in the young people who work at EDF, the organization can maybe avoid the high turn-over rate in entry level positions.

I worked at Environmental Defense full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A wealthy and mostly well run organization, a somewhat laid back attitude. Good health benefits, matched 401k after 3 mo.

    Cons

Difficult at times to know where you stand with your managers and team. Lots of turn over, even at the top. If you come in at an Entry Level position, only 1 in 30 have a chance of growing and moving up.

I worked at Environmental Defense full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Effective organization with team spirit, respected in its field

    Cons

They don't do much to retain you in terms of training for what might be next for you or finding a place for you in the organization if your role or program ends. Expect to be layered.

    Advice to Management

Before you let people walk out the door, talk to them about how they could still contribute to the organization. You let lots of talent get away.
