    Pros

great Development support team. they have great communication with each other, and great sense of teamwork. they are willing to lend a hand when needed, band together to execute projects, and they are not only colleagues but become friends as well. they look out for your best interest along with the best interest of the department to further the success of the company.

    Cons

Development management team lacks that communication and teamwork. management team cannot articulate their needs, they can only articulate what is wrong after assigning a task without direction.

    Advice to Management

needs better communication and articulation of needs. needs to articulate what is wanted when assigning a task rather than waiting to see a draft and pointing out everything that is NOT wanted. need to make themselves more present and available in the office.

    Pros

This is a great org to work for if you care about pragmatic solutions to environmental problems. Middle management is generally great in my experience, caring about their employees and generally seeking to encourage professional growth.

    Cons

Upper management is a little detached, and often times the pressure to fund raise overtakes other work priorities. While personal and professional growth is encouraged there are limits and promoting from within seems rare.

    Pros

I think the best reasons to work for EDF has to be the atmosphere. The NYC office is extremely laid back, everyone is very friendly. The employers are very understanding of your personal life and time and don't want you to revolve your life around the job. As for the office itself, it is in a great location in the heart of the Flatiron district. The office has a very open floor plan with high ceilings that help prevent you from going stir crazy and It also consists of 4 floors and 3 kitchens with some of the most amazing views of the city I've ever seen

    Cons

The downside of working at EDF has to be the leadership and continuity of the missions. Often it seemed there was no direct resolve in the work in we were doing.

    Advice to Management

My best advice to the EDF mgmt would have to be for better communication among the workers. Although communication was constant substance and meaning were often lacking

self-motivated, passionate, inspired, people who care

    Cons

typical non-profit underdeveloped operational resources. systems for tracking budgets, submitting for reimbursement or vendor payments, any HR related process - all unclear, outdated, incredibly complicated and very, very slow.

    Cons

Employees with donor connections run the show even if they are incompetent, typical bureaucracy to be expected from a big organization

I have been working at Environmental Defense full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

-Great mission and cause to work for
-More corporate than most non profits, more organized
    -Excellent flexibility and work-life balance

    Cons

-Organization needs to invest in staff and training- management could use some help
-Lack of upward mobility, especially for junior level staff- the organization fails to hire within
-EDF doesn't always live up to its values- the lack of diversity, in terms of ethnicity and thought evidences this
-Not as progressive or innovative as the organization touts itself to be

    Advice to Management

    1. Invest in your people. If you're hiring management, they need to know how to manage projects as well as people. If they don't, get them training! It's unfair for staff to suffer under an inexperienced manager.

    2. Don't underestimate junior level staff. They deserve to be mentored and promoted. It's unfortunate that many of them end up leaving when they are more than qualified to move up in the EDF ranks.

    3. The organization is overwhelmingly.... not diverse. Hire people of different races, sexual orientations and political affiliations. With diversity in staff, you'll create more innovative solutions and different ways to approach issues that the organization would never be able to develop with the same voices and same experiences.
