I have been working at Environmental Investigation Agency US full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The employees are all such hard-working, friendly, and dedicated people. Management is very understanding and flexible, which is great when unexpected challenges come up. Benefits are great, and job location is excellent. EIA accomplishes so much for it's size and a significant portion of the funding goes directly to vital campaign work to protect our environment.

    Cons

Could use a dedicated HR employee, as well as more fundraising/development staff.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Environmental Investigation Agency US full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Small flexible environmental nonprofit with dynamic mission, very impactful work. Lots of opportunities to advance new ideas, learn new skills, depending on your own initiative. Small but strong team, very collaborative and supportive work environment. Relatively low turnover.

    Cons

Urgent developments can throw off long term planning. Small team where everyone chips in, but this means often some projects get delayed. Constant effort to better balance competing priorities.

    Advice to Management

Continue working to improve organization and supportive structure while staying nimble. Note - DC and London offices are two separate organizations.

    Pros

The campaign workers are very passionate about their goals. It's easy to see that they all care very much for each other and the world.

    Cons

Difficult to rise up in the ranks if not associated directly with project work. Interns/fellows stay in that position for much longer than usual.

I worked at Environmental Investigation Agency US

    Pros

International travel, small NGO feel, meaningful mission statement. Seemingly a great organization.

    Cons

No human resources department, zero concern for anyone that is not a part of "management", huge egos at top level, suffers from Founder's Syndrome. Hiring committee will talk a good game but there is no follow through. There is high turnover with good reason. BEWARE.

    Advice to Management

Start treating your employees as people you value if you want them to be at the organization for more than 2 years.

I worked at Environmental Investigation Agency US full-time

    Pros

The organization's goals and objectives are important and valuable. Lots of interaction with DC government officials, other NGOs, and global partner organizations, plus trips to new places all around the world.

    Cons

Employee turnover is very high. There is no opportunity for professional growth within the organization, in part, because leadership does not invest in their employees and is content with continually rehiring for the same positions when people exit. As a result, do not expect to be there more than 2 years. Program directors/leaders also do not provide good, constructive or timely feedback. There is no adequate HR department/person...

    Advice to Management

Re-think organizational and programmatic leadership. Make a job at EIA one that people want to keep.

I have been working at Environmental Investigation Agency US full-time

    Pros

Ambitious group of like minded people that are very committed to their work

    Cons

HR and line management could be much improved. More junior staff lack clear direction or sense of progression and the small size of the organisation means its slow to progress internally. Legacy campaigns still have a strong influence on areas of work.

    Advice to Management

Look to increase the competitiveness of salaries and improve management within the organisation.
