    Pros

Well-positioned to effect positive environmental change; reasonable opportunity at staff level to move among different environmental media (air, water, etc.) and offices; Agency is well-supported by the Obama Administration; jobs tend to be very secure at staff level

    Cons

Progress on issues can be slow due to huge number of in house stakeholders and concomitant number of meetings; senior managers have inordinate power to negatively affect careers with very little fear of recourse; many Congressional Republicans try to make it difficult for Agency to do its job through limiting funding and "oversight" activities

    Advice to Management

There should be a formalized process for employees to provide feedback on their direct manager to manager's rating official -- nobody has a better sense of the quality of their leadership than the people being led. Senior managers are far too isolated from legitimate feedback, and should be required to submit to a "360 (i.e., peer, subordinate and superior) review" and be actually pay attention to the results

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

The younger people who work here work hard, and are smart. In fact, many possess advanced degrees, and have a great work ethic.

    Cons

The management is unfair with how they treat employees. Many times, if you work extra hours, you will be questioned. Completely the opposite of private!

    Advice to Management

They must start treating employees more fair. Extra work should not be given to those who work on their days off, but instead to those who are sleeping.

    Pros

EPA has an important mission and there are many exciting things going on in the environmental field right now, like climate change and green jobs. EPA has many competent staff level people who really care about the work they do. EPA has flexiplace (work at home) program and flex hours. EPA has a transit subsidy program. Good benefits, generally, altho dental benefits are not very good. Lots of opportunities to move around within the agency and get different experiences. Generally, very flexible on leave for personal reasons such as caring for a sick family member, and they have a leave bank program.

    Cons

Right now at EPA there is a lack of management support of scientists within EPA. If you want to know more about this go to the Union of Concerned Scientists website and read the report they did on this topic. Sometimes it is difficult to make things happen within such a large agency where there is so much paperwork to make anything happen. In this administration, EPA is underfunded. There is a lack of sufficient funds for training, travel, awards, etc. It's really hard to do your job well when you are based in SF, but supposed to cover Nevada, Hawaii, AZ, CA and there's very little travel dollars.

    Advice to Management

Need to be making better science-based decisions (vs. political decisions) utilizing the knowledge of the scientists within EPA. Need to focus on retaining the innovative, new staff in EPA who are frustrated by and not sufficiently challenged by the work given to them.

    Pros

Great reputation for environmental protection. Decent pay, and benefits for a full-time position. Staff was friendly, professional, and overall a nice group.

    Cons

Staff didn't have a clear idea of their needs. I was hired as an intern but given no real direction.

    Pros

The vision and mission to protect health and the environment for future generations.

    Cons

Some EPA managers do not allow or limit telework. When interviewing ask the interviewer about his or her policy on telework. EPA office organizational cultures vary. Before accepting an EPA job get as much information as possible about morale, workforce development, supportive supervisor environment and overall reputation of the program office.

    Advice to Management

Review your EPA organization Civil Rights statistics.

    Cons

Incompetent useless and down right cruel management. Bosses who are no better than school yard bullies

    Advice to Management

    Pros

    Stable job for federal employee

    Cons

for non federal employee, everything is disappointing. Low pay, limited stuff to learn and no benefits at all. Contractors, SEE people and interns do a lot for EPA, but they do not get what they deserve.

    Advice to Management

Treat the Contractors and SEE people better
