Avoid this company like the plague

    Pros

Great places to eat in Bethesda. Metro accessible.

    Cons

Management is incompetent. Zero work life balance. Terrible culture. I've never seen a more toxic company in my working career. Look at all these other reviews in here. If it was only one person that had this issue this page would not be full.

Overall, look at it as a temporary position, not a permanent one

    Pros

Great location in downtown Bethesda (if it's easy to commute). Lots of lunch options. Great benefit packages including subsidizing the gym (Equinox). The office is light and airy. They stock it well with snacks, drinks etc. The other employees are friendly and for the most part engaging. While there are politics, it is no different from any other work place I have been. The work can be exciting, especially if you are a quant jock and like working with numbers and spreadsheets.

    Cons

Enviva is not the worst company I have worked for. However, many of the issues outlined in previous reviews are accurate. The management can be tyrannical in enforcing certain policies and does not protect or value employees. There is a very real sense that because they are providing you a paycheck you should always be grateful to them. There is no remote work policy and several key employees have left because the management wants to be able to see them every day. Work/life balance is hard especially in the back remote systems. There are simply not enough people in accounting/finance functions to run it so people have a fair sense of being able to get home and spend time with loved ones. Enviva has a history of randomly firing people for 'iffy' reasons at best. If you don't get fired, most people quit after a year or two. You should look at this company as a stop to get advancement on your career, but not as a permanent place to work. Also, there is no upward movement. People are never promoted or advanced. It's obvious who the favorites are from the CEO.

    Accept Job with Caution

    Pros

Autonomous work environment and not micromanaged. Great benefits. Free lunch often.

    Cons

Disorganized, lack of communication with new policies and procedures, poor training for new hires, and disrespectful management. I originally thought the poor reviews were just angry employees, but they are true. The company is all over the place. Management is very unprofessional. A previous review mentioned management cursing at employees. This is a true statement, as it has been witnessed. Everything is in excel and the ERP system is not as user friendly as most. Controls and policies are not put in place, so tasks are not consistent. If they are put in place, they are not communicated to the team as needed. There is no work life balance. You are expected to work long hours and are made to feel guilty if you leave at a reasonable time.

    Pros

Benefits are above average. Pay is decent for the area.

    Cons

Company claims people is their number 1 value which is a lie; No Work/ Life Balance for Managers at the plant level. Company Hires Regional and Corporate staff that do not help the plants. The only way you will go places in this company is if you are part of the 'G' Click. The company only wants engineers for all of the managerial and regional jobs. No opportunity to grow and advance. You get Stagnant in your role. Burn Out occurs rapidly and often for employees. Company doesn't spend money on the right things. Micro Management starts at the top and is extended to the plant levels. Leadership team and HR consist of individuals who are not capable of doing their jobs. Leadership will be the demise of this company.

The Poor Reviews are 99% Correct

    Pros

Enviva is a growing company, and they seem to have little market competition for the space they're in. As long as political headwinds don't change, or significant technological advancements don't disrupt their market, they've set themselves up for the next 15-20 years or more. Plenty of free food and snacks. Company provided vehicle for high travel employees.

    Cons

Whatever the Pros are, they are significantly outweighed by the Cons. The most serious downside is upper management, especially that over Operations. They have high turnover for a reason. The several mentions of long working hours and poor work / life balance are here for a reason. There are plenty of other, much larger, 24/7 industrial companies that don't struggle like this. Yes, they pay pretty well. Other companies pay just as well and better. Why does upper management perform poorly? They overwhelmingly come from industries dissimilar to Enviva's core business, and their logic and decision making strategies don't align with what the company actually does. The plant's are not assembly lines, but management wants them run that way. Everyone is learning on the fly what it means to run a processing company, but instead of acknowledging their failures and changing course, it's as though they dig their heels in deeper. Despite several fancy business degrees running around the company, they've not yet been able to correct what all these reviews over several years have repeatedly said. I don't think management is stupid. I think they're arrogant. I saw many dedicated, hard working individuals get openly and publicly maligned and defamed by management. There are still several good people working here, and I firmly believe that if the CEO and the board did a major shakeup with upper management, Enviva would see tremendous growth.

Not a safe place to work

Jan 2, 2017 - Anonymous Employee in Franklin, VA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

The only pro I can think of is that Enviva has some great people at the hourly level working for them

    Cons

Absolutely no work life balance. 24 hour + work days, no regard for ones personal safety after working that many hours. Questionable choices for managers especially where safety is concerned and even more questionable environmental practices. If you don't buy into their mantra, you won't be in the club.
