"Great company, great people. Games with Benefits"

RecommendsPositive OutlookApproves of CEOI worked at Epic Games
Pros
-Talent level of other developers is exceptional, there's an expert in most new tasks you might try to take on, already there to ask -People in the trenches with you care about doing things the right way, buck stops at most peoples desks -Quality equipment is provided to enable work quality -Generous benefits, health coverage is great, so is the 401k matching and profit share -Tim Sweeney shares the wealth the way most companies promise, but don't -Games and technology sales provide job security -Oh and there is a slide from one floor to the other people!
Cons
-It's growth has changed the culture a lot, hard to know who can resolve an issue and its become producer heavy -Project development influenced or dictated by biz people or Tencent as Fortnite is about license deals & media events to draw people in -A lot of work is thrown away. The company can afford it, but it affects morale -There is a non-developer class system, different rules about when you are allowed in the kitchen for example -Although the bonus plan is good, people are pitted against each other for higher placement upon it. It creates tension both ways

Doesn't RecommendNeutral OutlookNo opinion of CEOI worked at Epic Games full-time
Pros
Benefits are okay, and there are some genuinely amazing people who work there
Cons
Epic Games is the sort of company that looks great if you listen to upper management - they are proponents of rewarding employees and offering good benefits - but underneath it's a meat grinder that enables bullying and abusive behavior. I once worked 30 days straight on crunch and, when I requested time off, I was told it would have to wait because there was too much work to do. The same manager once yelled in my face - the only time I've felt physically threatened in a professional environment. This same manage was allowed to consistently bully me even after I asked HR to intervene. There are a lot of great people who work at Epic, but unfortunately there's an unchecked culture of bullying and exploitation which can make working there a traumatizing experience. I'm not being hyperbolic when I say I have sleight PTSD from working there.

RecommendsNeutral OutlookApproves of CEOI worked at Epic Games for more than a year
Pros
Great benefits Unlimited paid time off in case of family emergencies Lots of opportunity to expand your knowledge and grow in a role Fast paced work environment assures the work is never boring Opportunity to lead and work with teams around the world Opportunity to travel for events and other cool things Some of the best people in the industry are there, and are insanely skilled Mandatory breaks off in the summer and the winter (which doesn't count towards any PTO).
Cons
Fortnite rules the company and drive almost every objective. Senior management wields too much unchecked power. senior production staff are yes-men who are too willing to throw teams under the bus to avoid taking any blame for poor decisions. Some teams will consistently have to work nights and weekends because someone doesn't like something, despite those same team's leaders having daily reviews with senior leadership on the game. Other management will sometimes grab developers and give them random mandates or tasks without going through production, derailing other projects because they thought they saw something wrong in Grafana. Changes to the game can sometimes be driven from kneejerk reactions from Reddit.

I worked at Epic Games full-time
Pros
There are plenty of opportunities available to learn and expand your technical skills and many coworkers with valuable experience to learn from.
Cons
Due to how many people flow through QA unless you stand out or have good communication with your leads you can easily be forgotten.

RecommendsPositive OutlookI worked at Epic Games for less than a year
Pros
6+ options of free hot catered meals from local establishments every day, and the options change every week, CEO is just a regular guy who really cares about his employees AND their families, middle management love their positions and make it known that your well being comes first, VERY positive work social life balance, generally a positive attitude from everyone I met (even construction contract workers, as the company is ever expanding). My own boss was THE best boss I've ever had, encouraged creativity and exploration. Folks help each-other and in turn everyone enjoys the (sometimes difficult yet rewarding) work. I hope to work there again in the future.
Cons
Raleigh NC is full of cockroaches. Most call them paul meadow bugs. I am not a bug guy. You can probably do the math. Found myself wishing I had chosen a more urban apartment to avoid these disgusting creatures. They are intelligent, fast and difficult to keep out. What REALLY creeped me out is that after trapping or killing enough of them, you realize that they infact realize when you see them, and will actively avoid line of sight. YIKES. As for the actual cons, I have none to give from personal experience, though I know my co-workers working on actual game development were given sometimes exceedingly difficult to attain deadlines that would leave them unhappy. On the other hand, I worked for the experimental portions of the unreal engine, and the deadlines were much softer.
