Amazing Company, just not as amazing for contractors

      Pros

Decent pay, flexible with time off when you need it, free food/snacks/drinks/coffee, great environment and culture

      Cons

Contractors are second class citizens. Abysmally low conversion rates because apparently its easier to just train another person to do the job when your contract is up rather than keeping someone that knows what they are doing or that has experience.

Great place to work, then Good, now average and getting worse.

      Pros

Free food in the kitchen, plenty of fun things around the office, lax attire. The CEO has great plans and priorities for making customers happy.

      Cons

They pay less than average because "It's Epic" No time to enjoy any of the pros because you're always in crunch, blatant cronyism in upper management under the new leadership since the old president left. They've hired too many people too fast, and now everyone is just another number, and its really harder to get your job done now. The execs under the CEO are exacting his plans to make customers happy at the expense of employee happiness. There are talks of bonuses, but they don't happen anymore.

A truly EPIC place to work! A few suggestions but otherwise AWESOME!

      Pros

100% FULL Health coverage Awesome-- retirement match! - the max the law allows and immediately vested! Free food and drinks – literally a full 7-11 convenience store in the kitchen. They could open it up to the public and charge lol. (I get royalties, it’s my idea) Awesome, hip, Work hard BUT play hard environment. VERY fun, caring, giving atmosphere. Other departments just as awesome as yours! Talented employees in EVERY dept. Premiere access to video games, VR and other awesome new stuff. Be the first to play the PS5 or XBOX 1000 (or whatever they name the next new gaming rig)  No stuffy dress code – shorts and t-shirts allowed. Onsite Gym, games, and countless other perks.

      Cons

Epic used to have a family cohesive unit mentality. They have abandoned that and have gone much more corporate. Lost a little bit of personal touch there. TONS of veteran employees left – some to work for the competition. But lots of new talent coming in. Last minute / do not plan ahead for large tasks; then upset when it takes forever to implement or why there are problems. Very typical = “I knew about this for 2 weeks, but I’m telling you today, could care less if you are here till 2am, I need this. Can this be done by tomorrow so we can present it live on GTV? No? Well, it needs to be done…” Unfortunately if it causes issues, you are to blame, not the person who waited till last minute.

A great company with good people but ok projects

      Pros

Great company culture that reinforces open communication. People are very friendly and pro-active. No specific working hours is a great thing and people don't abuse that, in fact is the other way around, many individuals work more hours than normal but because they want, not because it was required of them, Great perks, free food, Epic Friday, company lunch Game On. Also having clearly the best engine on the market so far for your daily work really helps to get amazing results. The producers are great.

      Cons

No cons actually damage the great company that Epic is. CONS: some projects lack originality and investors interfere on them too much. People on higher level of administration try to fix things by assuming instead of asking. New hires on leading roles are chosen focused on resume title history and communication skills, instead of those plus knowledge and actual skill-set. For a 2 year old engine some basic tools are still missing and makes really hard to execute your work properly. UX tests and UX lab are cool but incredibly old fashioned and having a UX lab doesn't mean that it's being used correctly. It's an old fashioned UX lab that forces game design choices too much by regressing towards 20 year old design concepts, it may cause projects to be boring, unoriginal and specially ugly, there is a lot of "by the UX book" or "we are experts" but is a very old book used by old fashioned people, they should test things not design them.

      Dreams vs reality

      Pros

Dream come true. It was my dream to work at Epic Games because 'The Making of Gears of War' DVD is what made me want to work in games. Great facilities, great perks like loads of different free food every day, language classes, awesome relocation support . Lots of interesting, smart people working there. Regular demos to the whole studio with pizza, a lot of fun. Weekly group test sessions with production team and studio lead, very interesting (and lots of fun). Sense of camaraderie. Regular video all hands company calls with Epic HQ.

      Cons

Old school approach of '1 person decides' instead of tapping into the power and creativity of the group to drive a game in a certain direction. Initiative was seen as a negative, which was shocking but true. In the Polish studio people would switch to Polish mid-meeting until the end of the meeting leaving expats confused. It feels like there is no way to give true feedback on the game (with the game having been managed basically from North-Carolina as far as creative direction/design). Feedback on performance was mainly negative, not much focus on the positives. Communicating with 'higher ups' was a definite no-no, not an open culture.
