I have been working at Epic Systems Corporation (Wisconsin) full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great compensation, benefits, annual bonuses and raises. Cool travel perks (lots of miles and hotel points that you can use for personal travel)

    Cons

They expect you to devote your entire life to your job. You'll never stop thinking about work and your happiness and social life will suffer. 90% of the project managers I know, regardless of tenure, have an exit strategy for when and how to leave Epic

    Advice to Management

Care more about your current employees. Quit treating us like we are expendable and working us until we can't take it anymore

I have been working at Epic Systems Corporation (Wisconsin) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The benefits at this company are amazing; better than the public sector. The work is challenging, and you're constantly learning. You have amazing coworkers who want you to be successful and will help on that path. There are often many ways for you to get involved in projects you enjoy.

    Cons

There are times of the year when deadlines approach and work becomes about 10 additional hours per week to meet them. If you don't have a good manager, these times can become very stressful.

Additionally, they really need to work on management. The newer managers seem to be better trained and supportive of their employees.

    Advice to Management

Consider ongoing training for team leads. There are team leads who are out of touch with what it feels like to be a new employee. They ask you where you want to take your career, when you know nothing about the company, and they offer no further guidance. Also, use metrics to make decisions about current management. If all members of a team leave within a year, consider that it's most likely the manager at fault and do something to remedy the situation.

I would give this position 5 stars if it weren't for the management issue. It negatively impacts the entire experience working at Epic.

I have been working at Epic Systems Corporation (Wisconsin) full-time

    Pros

Very high salary if you can make it beyond the first couple of years
    Young fun atmosphere
Give everyone a chance to be successful regardless of school/major as long as you prove you can think critically and did well in school
Growth comes from anywhere - don't have a defined progression you grow based on your strengths

    Cons

Very long work hours - told me ~50 in interview closer to 60-65 on most weeks
Travel/Accounting - apparently being reimbursed for trips (you put these on your personal credit cards) timely is a privilege not an expectation so don't be surprised if it takes 2-3 months for a reimbursement.
Travel expectations - was told 50% travel, yet if you're at 50% or less in this role expect them to just give you another travel customer
Feedback culture and how your managers monitor your performance - they don't work directly with you so they consistently bug people to submit feedback
Turnover - they'll tell you at the monthly staff meetings that their turnover is great but work on any project and you'll see differently. On both of my install projects nearly 40% of the originally staffed employees were on the project at go-live.

    Advice to Management

During the hiring process be more honest with what a candidate should expect.

I have been working at Epic Systems Corporation (Wisconsin) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Workplace culture is fun and chill, you get to work with tons of yuppies (pro if you're a young professional yourself), work is challenging and varies day to day, lots of responsibility off the bat

    Cons

It's easy to feel like just another number, if the customer team you're staffed to isn't easy to work with you are pretty much stuck with them until you leave or ask to be switched off, people are constantly leaving which doesn't harvest commitment to the company

    Advice to Management

Treat each employee as an individual and don't expect that every TS needs 3 customers and can handle doing 3 go-live trips each year. Also consider work away days as more of an option across the company and not just Implementation services. I think management needs to really think about how they can retain employees for more than a 2 year time frame- the turnover is frustrating for customers, subject area experts and I'm sure management itself.

I have been working at Epic Systems Corporation (Wisconsin) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

As a first job out of college, it was a good salary and great learning experience. Also the fact that they hire a ton of recent college grads made it easy to make friends. And a job here opens up good career opportunities for the future.

    Cons

Regular 80+ hour weeks and a culture of working crazy long. Also I did not feel adequately prepared to be trusted with the decisions needed for a large hospital software implementation.

I worked at Epic Systems Corporation (Wisconsin) full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Salary, learning opportunities (C# class, reimbursed classes through UW madison). Travel reimbursement every 5 years for sabbatical.

    Cons

Not transparent. Lots of doublespeak, and everybody insists it's the exact opposite. Heavy cheerleader effect in the beginning.

Cultish company vibe. Constantly dissing competition, insisting own moral superiority.

Many young managers. Constant power struggle with boss.

Everybody insists that we are collaborative, but the job, by construction, puts you in competition with your peers. They have a big firing season between february through may to make room for the big hiring seasons in the summer months, after schools let students out.

    Advice to Management

    Respect the power dynamic.

    Be transparent.

I have been working at Epic Systems Corporation (Wisconsin) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Supportive environment for personal and professional growth
Provides opportunity to learn quickly about a diverse range of project management and healthcare IT
    Lots of opportunities for autonomy

    Cons

The kind of support you receive is dependent on your ability to communicate your needs
Pressure to succeed and work overtime is not for everyone
    Self motivation is a must

    Advice to Management

Spend some time having Sales communicate with Implementation staff more often to ensure promises that are being made won't be grueling and taxing.

I have been working at Epic Systems Corporation (Wisconsin) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great campus, bright young co-workers, neat artwork. Lots of opportunities to contribute and make a difference to your customer. Pay is good and Madison is a great place to live, especially during the summer.

    Cons

Almost no one over the age of 30 is hired at Epic. Mostly male co workers as the policies are not supportive of families or children. Expectations for travel are quite high, as are number of billable hours per month. Because travel is not billable, many implementers are working incredibly long hours on a regular basis. This is NOT a job for someone with a family, or a dog.

    Advice to Management

Reconsider how staffing is determined so that individuals have a choice in their assignments. Allow individuals who struggle with balancing work and travel with family and community responsibilities to stay with Epic but in a different role. Developing more "extra pair of hands" roles to assist during peak times of stress might be one way to retain good people who need a break. That individuals make a point of specifying that they will not have access to email when on vacation should be an indication that customers can be quite demanding and are perhaps abusive of Epic staff's time and goodwill. Hire and respect those with life experiences--they may bring perspectives that the Company would benefit from considering.

    Cool campus, really good food.

    Cons

Some of the employees are ok, but a lot of inconsiderate people too and many who drive like absolute maniacs/idiots around campus.

    Advice to Management

Fire employees who are inconsiderate and drive like clowns.

    Pros

Relatively well pay, given Wisconsin costs of living.

    Cons

Toxic working environment, teams do not cooperate.
Bin rank employees based on how many hours per week they work.
Terrible technology, useless skills, not applicable for your career
