I worked at Equity Residential full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

All of the training and classes offered to all positions.

    Cons

Didn't feel hard work went noticed and recognized as much as it should have in the garden properties. It seemed in order to be stressful you needed to be at an up and coming property or one downtown.

I have been working at Equity Residential full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - You get to work with some of the best talent in the industry.
    - There's usually a lot of upward movement available for property operations.
    - The employees are smart and good at what they do, but they also don't take themselves too seriously. They know how to laugh and be personable.
    - They care about work/life balance.
    - Upper management takes employee feedback seriously.
    - Decent rental discount if you live at one of the communities.

    Cons

    - New ideas are sometimes hard to test or get off the ground due to the size of the company and how many people/ depts need to be involved in any one initiative.
    - There's a little bit of office politics that comes into play, as with any corporate environment.
    - A lot of the strategy and decision-making happens in the Chicago headquarters, so some in the field find it hard to be empowered and take ownership in their roles.
    - Health insurance coverage isn't great. You end up paying a good amount out-of-pocket.

    Advice to Management

    - Make the health benefits more competitive.
    - Engage field corporate employees more in strategy. Provide them more advancement opportunities.
    - Invest a bit more in corporate field employees' work environment. Employees at headquarters get so many more perks.
    - Consider partnering with local child care and preschools to offer related benefits to employees.

I have been working at Equity Residential full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company does do a fantastic job of hiring, at least for the employees working at leasing properties. My particular property accepts undergraduate students (the majority of which do indeed come from very privileged backgrounds), so you gain very valuable knowledge on when to "lay down the law" and when to simply provide good, polite customer service.

    Cons

Especially as a new employee, challenges will be presented to you and you may not have much guidance or support in the moment. It is also a "typical corporation" in the way that corporate level employees can have a major disconnect with those actually responsible for managing affairs on site.

    Advice to Management

The hiring team is doing a great job. I would suggest more communication and empathy for the challenges on-site employees face instead of focusing entirely on numbers which negatively affects the company in the long-term reputation wise.

I have been working at Equity Residential full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Job security and good benefits

    Cons

Lack of honesty when it comes to use you employee discount to live in their properties. I got almost homeless by being lead to believe a lie. Only corporate gets the best of the company has to offer.

    Advice to Management

Be honest and stop favoritism and discrimination specially towards single employees.

I have been working at Equity Residential full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I love the atmosphere here at Equity. It's a company that really does (for the most part) care about their employees. They really do foster a bootstrap mentality that anyone can go from the bottom on up and I see that all the time. They love to promote from within! They also have fantastic online classes and great structure for anyone new to the industry and/or company.

    Cons

Worst thing? The fact that Equity works with skeletal crews, operating properties super skinny on personal in comparison to other companies. This in turn creates tons of stress as really you could really really use that extra service or office person. The other big con is how they treat employee residents. I have repeatedly seen my rent increases over 10% as an employee and there is literally no way to negotiate without putting up the biggest fuss. It is SO incredibly demotivating to work for a company that you know is taking home millions every year and then the one big perk of property management they squeeze you.

    Advice to Management

Be the company I fell in love with 10 plus years ago and stop trying to get too corporate

I have been working at Equity Residential full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-A real emphasis on individuality and taking responsibility
    -Great training programs
-Company culture is fantastic, especially compared to many direct REIT competitors
-Upper management is always available for support and guidance

    Cons

-Internal growth is slow, with promising open positions getting inundated with overqualified internal applicants
-The pay is horrible. You work too hard for what you make. They recently started a new commission system which is paltry.
-Time off is very minimal, and there is a lot of push back when you try to use your little bit of vacation time and sick time.

    Advice to Management

Look at your financials and understand that your localized employees are the ones who are driving growth in your YTD returns. If your business plan depends on operating in expensive cities, you need to pay your employees enough to live comfortably.
