I have been working at Equity Residential (Less than a year)

    Pros

On-boarding process shows commitment to knowledge and weekly meetings can inspire team culture.

    Cons

Not very challenging; performance measurement metrics are difficult to understand for even management; leadership seems very inconsistent.

    Advice to Management

Create more goal orientated growth model and incentive 'above and beyond' performance.

    Pros

For a large, publicly-traded company with a dispersed employee population there is a tremendous small company feel. The organization truly cares about and values their employees and invests alot in employee and leadership development.
Highly competitive benefits and good compensation.
Highly accessible/visible senior leadership team with transparent communications to all levels.
Solid company with well positioned assets and a never-ending quest to be the best performing multi-family company, and definately is a leader of the pack.

    Cons

There may be some differences among the markets based on regional leadership but generally there is a pretty universal employee experience.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great balance between people, profits & product! And your open, honest lines of communication.

I have been working at Equity Residential full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The pay is decent...and that's even debatable.

    Cons

This company is cheap, robotic and micromanaged. Managers can make the smallest decisions without it being approved by upper management. if you're a favorite of upper management.. you will get promoted even if you don't deserve it. i watched good, talented people leave because they were not getting promoted after years of hard work. The fakeness of the corporate culture is also striking.

    Advice to Management

There's a reason for such high turnover. You need to make a change - at least in the NY region.

I worked at Equity Residential full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

For the big names in the industry, EQR pays well to those who come with experience. They are also very transparent with their pay and how much room you have to grow your salary. Good resume and salary booster if you don't care about sticking around for too long.

    Cons

The culture of this company is poor. Morale of employees is very low as many feel spread too thin, burnt out, and not cared about. At times it was almost toxic how negative everybody was. The rate of employee turnover is insane! I saw other reviews describing the company as the "walmart of property management". Couldn't agree more - this company is cheap, cheap, cheap. They will cut everything they possibly can from the budget and scrutinize every dollar spent without any concern to the impact on the revenue these poor decisions can have. If you are lucky, capital projects will eventually get approved but they will drag their feet forever to get them done. I couldn't believe some of the safety hazards at my property! Support from facilities leadership is a joke. The corporate culture seemed more like some words on a poster than anything anyone actually tried to live by. Messages from Senior Leadership came across as robotic and ingenuine. They try to implement a one size fits all approach to their management style and on-site employees are not empowered to make any decisions on their own, micromanagement is an understatement.

    Advice to Management

They aren't open to actual change, they've heard it over and over from so many so there's no sense in bothering.

    Pros

Great benefits. Well run company from a financial standpoint. Senior mgmt (CEO, CFO, COO) are the best in the industry. Company allows you to work virtually when you wish. Central location in West Loop near Ogilvie and Union Stations. 5 minute walk to Blue Line. Fun monthly get togethers like group breakfast, afternoon snack breaks.

    Cons

Company is spread out over 3 floors - you can go several days without seeing people from different departments unless you make a point of it. Makes networking more difficult and "being visible".

    Advice to Management

More communication re: goals now that the company has "right sized" its portfolio. Be more visible on floors/area other than your own. Walk around and talk to people on a regular basis instead of hunkering down in your offices. Be more proactive than reactive in responding to market conditions and quarterly results.

    Survey based bonus percentage
