I worked at Ercot (Less than a year)

    Pros

Challenging work, good benefits, great career path, good co-workers, good managers.

    Cons

While some managers are foster great working environments, some departments are actually run by lead analysts (who prefer to call themselves supervisors) and can be very ill-mannered.

There is some tension between operations and those working with downstream data. The operators who are managing the statewide electrical grid are working under a great deal of pressure and in real time. Consequently, some of the data they push out will be inaccurate. The support departments sometimes do not understand that. And perhaps operations do not understand that the support areas have to deal with clients and the data/billing has to be 100% accurate.
    Work/life balance could be better.

    Advice to Management

Foster a better understanding of the importance of every department. Managers needs to be aware of what is happening on the floor.

    Pros

Great company culture and environment. Fantastic benefits and pay. Work was engaging and management did a great job making new employees feel welcome.

    Cons

Austin office is a bit segregated from the main office, felt slightly isolated from other employees. No real cons besides that.

    Advice to Management

Continue doing what you're doing. Everyone seemed happy and everything worked well.

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. Quiet drive.

    Cons

Not worth the pay. Had to take matters in my own hands since management and HR did not consider or have the means to deal with a hostile worker and working environment. Manager lacked experience and knowledge of the department assigned to. Huge lack of respect between certain workers and management.

Also some of the programs offered are not to be taken. They do not offer any assistance without huge conditions that were not fully counciled on. Beware.

It's sad. Had potential but not worth the economics due to the toxicity leading to soul sucking mental hardships that could lead to councilling. The commute takes up any extra funds you may get from salary.

    Pros

New CEO is awesome. Lots of very smart people. The work matters to people of the state of Texas. Effort made to make employees feel comfortable and engaged. Some excellent managers who mentor employees and communicate well. Benefits were great. Campuses are nice and well kept. All in all, a great place to work.

    Cons

Taylor location far enough away from Austin to be a recruitment issue in some positions, and Taylor labor pool inadequate to fill some support positions. Despite many good managers, there are some walking nightmares and if you happen to be hired as a direct report to one of them, you're screwed. Some of these very bad bosses nevertheless are awesome at blood sport politics and no one is going to challenge them or hold them accountable for anything. Luckily this represents a small percentage of ERCOT's leadership. But if you land in a bad boss's department, you'd better learn how to play their game quick and, by all means, keep your mouth shut. Otherwise payback is hell.

    Advice to Management

Do 360 reviews of all managers and hold those with consistently poor reviews from peers and direct reports accountable for measurable improvement. Provide more effective manager training and better screen candidates for promotion into management roles. Bad managers are a liability and they do cost the company money.

I have been working at Ercot (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great exposure to a number of different areas related to grid management including generation, transmission, renewables, and market systems. Peaceful drive from Round Rock, great benefits, gym and health benefits. Work-life balance is amazing.

    Cons

Far from Austin if that's your preferred location. Constant fighting among departments. Average salaries. Has a number of downsides of being a non-profit

    Advice to Management

Great emphasis on employee health and happiness. Need to do something about the in-fighting. Also, all people should be treated equally. There is a perception that some people get better treatment than the others
