    I worked at Ercot full-time

    Pros

Overall a good company to work for. Benefits are really good. Most people there are like family.

    Cons

Is a bit "who likes who" when it comes to promotions and job changes. A lot of good ole boy going on. Emphasis on boy.
A lot depends on the Manager you get on how well you are treated.
Some are really great, others, not so much. I guess this is pretty much true everywhere.

    Advice to Management

Look at what is going on with the staff, It is not always as you are being told. Some Managers aren't always on the up and up. Look at someones workload, how well they get the job done. Popularity shouldn't be a criteria for a pay raise.

    Pros

The work is easy and the culture is collaborative within your group. 10 percent 401k on top of your salary.

    Cons

Small cubes, located in taylor, groups are in their silos. Hard to progress in the company.

    Advice to Management

Move from a utility mindset to a merit based system.

I worked at Ercot full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and competitive salaries; Operational results appreciated by the Texas power market stakeholders for its overall performance in support of the Texas ERCOT power market [Market Participants; PUCT; Texas Legislature; International interests].

    Cons

Leadership is shallow in working through breaking down silo culture between business departments. Progress is being made but slow and is hampered by political play between Vice Presidents. There is a need for top management to push reform through the VPs to put action behind words. Management level teams become frustrated for lack of executive level support for creative and innovative ways to use existing resources to collaborate and metric performance across teams in accomplishing highly technical and process improvements. The lack there of leaves the organization subject to potential failures in responsibilities during state power emergencies having to be in a reactive and less optimal responsive mode.

    Advice to Management

CEO and COO need to collaborate with an experienced outside firm who specializes deploying a vision for cross department collaboration culture through training; mentoring; and integrating information resources to provide the information network and performance feedback to support the collaboration culture.

I have been working at Ercot full-time

    Pros

Flexible hours, plenty of free time due to ridiculous change-control process, cool people for the most part.

    Cons

Change control, vague and poorly interpreted regulation, top-down project management, terrible inter-team communication, terrible insurance providers, wastes money on applications that never get fully implemented, no technical leadership, vendor lock-in requires maintaining ancient technology.

    Advice to Management

Dump the change control system, hire someone who can actually interpret regulations in a workable fashion.

I have been working at Ercot full-time

    Pros

Lots of bright, engaging people to work with. There are always new projects to get involved in. Lots of potential for self-driven individuals to work in areas that interest them even if it is outside of their comfort zone. Good mix of diversity in the workforce.

    Cons

With some exceptions, there is a big difference in the quality and effectiveness between mid-level and senior/executive management. There is oftentimes an inequitable division of work within departments, with more capable individuals relied upon to pick up a greater workload than others. While this seems to be expected with any difference in capability within a workforce, there is very little interest in developing less-capable individuals to a point where they can contribute more effectively, which fosters resentment between co-workers. There is very limited guidance from most supervisors/managers other than 'get the job done' and 'here is the next job'.

    Advice to Management

Take a more active role in identifying opportunities for position-specific professional development within departments, especially for individuals in a supervisory/managerial role.

I worked at Ercot (Less than a year)

    Pros

Challenging work, good benefits, great career path, good co-workers, good managers.

    Cons

While some managers are foster great working environments, some departments are actually run by lead analysts (who prefer to call themselves supervisors) and can be very ill-mannered.

There is some tension between operations and those working with downstream data. The operators who are managing the statewide electrical grid are working under a great deal of pressure and in real time. Consequently, some of the data they push out will be inaccurate. The support departments sometimes do not understand that. And perhaps operations do not understand that the support areas have to deal with clients and the data/billing has to be 100% accurate.
    Work/life balance could be better.

    Advice to Management

Foster a better understanding of the importance of every department. Managers needs to be aware of what is happening on the floor.
