I worked at Ercot as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Friendly environment, everyone was super encouraging. Solid mission and pays well.

    Cons

Few and far between, probably the location (Taylor) is the biggest downside.

I have been working at Ercot full-time

    Pros

Flexible hours, plenty of free time due to ridiculous change-control process, cool people for the most part.

    Cons

Change control, vague and poorly interpreted regulation, top-down project management, terrible inter-team communication, terrible insurance providers, wastes money on applications that never get fully implemented, no technical leadership, vendor lock-in requires maintaining ancient technology.

    Advice to Management

Dump the change control system, hire someone who can actually interpret regulations in a workable fashion.

    Pros

Many talented (mostly engineering and I/T) members - allows for idea sharing discussion, etc.

    Cons

    Limited growth opportunities (small company).
Remote location - no much goes on out there.
Cops that catch you speeding along the texas hwy 79 there.

I have been working at Ercot (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great exposure to a number of different areas related to grid management including generation, transmission, renewables, and market systems. Peaceful drive from Round Rock, great benefits, gym and health benefits. Work-life balance is amazing.

    Cons

Far from Austin if that's your preferred location. Constant fighting among departments. Average salaries. Has a number of downsides of being a non-profit

    Advice to Management

Great emphasis on employee health and happiness. Need to do something about the in-fighting. Also, all people should be treated equally. There is a perception that some people get better treatment than the others

I have been working at Ercot (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I feel obligated to write this review because the company has been fair to me. This is a good company to work for. Look, every workplace has some issues. That is why they call it "workplace" and not Disneyland. So while some people have commented less than favorably, it could be based on an isolated individual experience.

Overall, the company genuinely cares for its employees. We have one of the best HR departments I have ever worked for. Benefits are good. Stress free. Company is focused on improving employee physical health. We have a basketball court, a walking trail, on site GYM, fitness challenge classes. Yearly fitness fair for the whole family. My mental and physical health has greatly improved as a result of this company.

Dont think that I am too biased about ERCOT. I was almost part of a layoff that happened several years ago. That is the reality of a workplace. Still I have no regrets and feel grateful for having the opportunity to work here.

Job is very stable. Layoffs are rare. Pay is above average. Benefits are excellent. Guaranteed bonus (10% of paycheck) every year (vested after three years). 401k matching. Flex time, and more. Beat that!

    Cons

We dont necessarily use the latest technology. Taylor location. Transferable skills might be limited depending upon the area you work. This is the nature of working in the electric industry.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing the good job.

Good atmosphere. Low stress. Amazing benefits. The work is very interesting.

    Cons

Poor location. If it were in Austin out at least close no one would leave.

    Advice to Management

Could stand to have a consistent outlook on work from home policy.

I have been working at Ercot full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people, decent salary and awesome benefits. It's close to major metropolitan areas without having to deal with insane traffic daily. Coworkers are fun and most end up being good friends. There are lots of opportunities to learn. You get the feeling that the company cares about you.

    Cons

Upward mobility may not be as as easy as some want. I have heard that other positions can be too political and stressful.

    Advice to Management

Most managers are great, while some put too much pressure on their employees.
