I have been working at Espial full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good exposure to work on mission critical system, and able to play vital role of solution architect to many tier-1 European customers as their IPTV business grew with our company product.

    Cons

Poor strategic decisions of some products, leading to confusion and unnecessary anxiety on every day.

    Advice to Management

Retaining existing customers, and respect to employee's skills. Communicate periodically company goals, and steps required to achieve with feedback on progress made on the goals

    I worked at Espial full-time

    Pros

There is nothing good to say about the company

    Cons

The company is trying to survive and breakeven for years. It's a waste of time and money if you plan to invest in this company.

"How Espial wasted the wonderful opportunity - acquisition of Kasenna so cheaply"

    Pros

It was a great place to learn IPTV technology, especially the VOD server technology. The middle management is really nice to work with, despite the senior management.

    Cons

The executive management is not fully competent to navigate the complexities of the IPTV industry at the current time. The NIH syndrome along with limited experience in US will set the company back in till 3Q09.

    Advice to Management

The management needs to fully understand the implications of some of the product decisions - not make the decisions emotionally or based on location. They would also need to raise the morale of their engineering team.

  4. "Great team but too much overhead"

I worked at Espial full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Colleagues foster a friendly, social place to work. The help and support are there, whether it be from managers or team mates, when it's needed. Everyone understands the intended goal and innovative solutions get built to really touch problems. Good benefits package and excellent salary as a recent graduate. Cambridge manager is excellent. Encourage continuing professional development.

    Cons

Agile process is still somewhat infantile, but the company have made great strides since they first implemented it.
A lot of bureaucratic overhead can make development difficult.
Limited scope for progression past mid-level.

    Advice to Management

Your communication has improved greatly, so keep up the momentum there. Listen to your engineers closer when they advise against decisions.

I have been working at Espial full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The work is interesting, you get exposure to many different technologies, you get a chance to make a difference, you are free to choose your own development environment (whatever works for you), friendly environment, good manager

    Cons

Cross site communication and co-operation is frustratingly bad, a lack of direction from upper management, a lack of trust from upper management towards engineers (a "you will take this" approach is often adopted over a sensible discussion),

    Advice to Management

Listen to your engineers, when they say something is a bad idea, there's generally a good reason for that. Everyone knows the business goals and everyone wants to make it work.

I have been working at Espial full-time

    Pros

Have read the reviews and except for the latest HR shills, they are pretty bang on. At the working level people are excellent and fun to work with. Bright, motivated. Generally eager to step up and innovate. Good place if you are a new grad looking to gain experience. I honestly don't think I have worked with a such a fun bunch.

    Cons

Look at the corporate performance. Dismal. Executive Management makes decisions by throwing darts in the dark. Not sure how they have lasted so long. They are beyond cheap. Am surprised we don't have to share computers. Don't expect to come here and be awe inspired. Go read the Netflix Values presentation and things are exact opposite here.

    Advice to Management

Time to move on. Let someone else lead and have a go of things.
