Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

So much potential hindered by a mad men culture and lack of innovation

    Pros

As long as you keep your mouth shut then you’re guaranteed to never get fired.

    Cons

    - pay is awful compared to competitors - the company refuses to innovate since there isn’t too much competition - the number of options for remote work are lacking so they force you to move to the middle of nowhere (Redlands, CA) just because the founder is from there - the management is all old white men that grew up with jack. No real talent present anywhere - the company hires based off of where you went to college and not talent. They promote based off of this as well

    Creates some cool products

Aug 3, 2021 - Administrative Assistant in Redlands, CA

    Pros

Some management have good intentions and are accommodating Depending on your team, you may have some flexibility Medical is paid for and is decent Campus is beautiful, especially for being in Redlands. Profit sharing- 401k annual contribution

    Cons

Very little opportunity for moving up - they will just continue to add responsibilities to you without compensation or changing your title so as not to have to give a raise. VERY low annual raise (no cost of living increases either) Extremely negative view of changing policies from corporate and staff "It's how it has always been done" Most upper management/director level staff have been around since the beginning and are "friends of Jack". Questioning them is unheard of. Micromanaged by corporate... nothing can be done at all without corporate approval (staff are afraid to ask for some things for this reason) Very little trust in employees- Remote work was not really a thing prior to Covid and even then, they did not want to allow it. EXTREMELY POLITICAL... If you are not 100% Democratic, I would not recommend working here.

    Great Company but with flaws

Jul 8, 2021 - Product Engineer in Redlands, CA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Work life balance is ideal. Company culture is what others strive for. Team members are of the highest quality. Redlands campus is beautiful but it is in California which is a net negative.

    Cons

Pay could definitely be more competitive, especially in Redlands, CA. More open to remote work without having to jump through hoops. Internal movement can be slow as it requires approval all the way up the chain.

Very stable, sometimes to a fault.

Apr 14, 2021 - Software Developer II in Portland, OR

    Pros

Esri has never had any layoffs or taken on substantial debt, and as long as you don't rock the boat you can expect to work there as long as you please. People regularly work there for decades. Compared to the rest of the tech industry, I found this very comforting. If had a family, I would probably have valued the stability more. My managers and coworkers were all super nice. This is a nice place to work. Not being a public company has its advantages. Esri doesn't seek to maximize profit, they aim for slow and sustainable growth. Way less of a "move fast and break things" attitude than your average tech company. Salaried workers get paid for their time over 40 hours / week! This is called the "time bank", and it's the #1 best perk. In Portland, there is no expectation to work over 40 hours a week, but that isn't the case in Redlands.

    Cons

Stability also means stagnation. The fact that they're (nearly) a monopoly in the GIS space means that they're more concerned with grooming their current clients rather than breaking new ground, at least in my experience. My work was fairly stagnant and boring within the organization. There is plenty of opportunity for advancement internally, but I found it easier to just leave and join a different company. The Portland office is extremely homogeneous. Efforts to diversify the workplace are lackluster, and the hiring manager I spoke to about it did not inspire confidence. No referral hiring bonuses. Salary is a bit below what you could be getting elsewhere. It's a pretty conservative company, in many senses of the word. For example, in the summer of 2020 it took way too long before leadership put out anything explicitly saying "Black Lives Matter", and even then the statement was pretty wishy-washy. I don't think it was followed up by any substantive actions. Esri makes software for police departments, the military, ICE, and border patrol. That's never going to change. There's a moral hazard to working there, depending on your politics.

    Pros

    - Hourly pay, so you get paid for working long days - Amazing benefits (medical, dental, vision) - Private company (no layoffs or answering to shareholders) - ethical company and product - Casual work environment - Upward mobility - Profit sharing

    Cons

    - Pay is not quite as competitive as other tech companies - No free meals or catering - Redlands is not an attractive location in comparison to other tech companies

Great mission and work-life balance, but complacency can be an issue

Feb 27, 2021 - Software Development Engineer in Redlands, CA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Work-life balance is generally pretty good. They take care of their people, which shows in how many years people have worked there for. Overall, I’ve found fellow employees to be humble and interested in making the world better. When taking into account the cost of living in the Inland Empire, Esri pays pretty well. I’ve had no problems living a comfortable and good life as an employee.

    Cons

The length of employment and relative stability can lead to employees getting complacent. And this can in turn lead to being in a bubble to some degree. Being headquartered in Redlands and strongly preferring in-person (during non-pandemic times) work over remote work can be challenging for attracting new talent. Not everyone loves living in the Inland Empire.

    Good Place to Work

Jan 12, 2021 - User Experience Designer in Redlands, CA

    Pros

A lot of smart enthusiastic people to work with. Jack seems like a good man. Cafeteria food ain't bad.

    Cons

Too many silos in the company. Redlands isn't a great area to work in. Although they do good work, the general public doesn't know who Esri is.
