I have been working at Essendant full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Culture and work and life balance are definitely a +. Of course, this probably depends on location but overall, this is rare in our industry. you can go to amazon and work 60 hour weeks and 80+ during peak seasons. You will see a lot of complaints about training and HR but this could be said about any company. one thing is for certain, if you care about your performance, the performance of your colleagues, and have the bottom line of the company at heart, you will be successful and have plenty of opportunities to move up. Teamwork is valued. Corporate work and culture is a bit different then operations so don't compare the two.

    Cons

This is a difficult industry to be in this day and age. Bonuses are based on how the company performs and not as much as how you perform as an individual. Be prepared to work till the work is done. i mentioned work and life balance but if you cannot develop your team to get the job done, you will work harder and longer hours. i do not see this as a "con" but some will.

    Advice to Management

salaries and hourly wages should be constantly looked at to stay competitive. with turnover comes loss in productivity, quality, and even safety. We are here to take care of the customer and that can only be done by recruiting and retaining talent. Live the Guiding Actions/company values and not just talk about them. we have a great SLT and i do have hope. It is just hard to see our company loosing talented people to other companies.

I have been working at Essendant full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Competitive vacation & health benefits. 0-5 yrs = 3 weeks, 6-10 yrs = 4 weeks & 10+ = 5 weeks vacation.

    Cons

Periods of complete chaos, disorganized management of order drops and heated communication by management.

    Advice to Management

Staff appropriately for the operation at hand.

I have been working at Essendant full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Wholesale is under pressure from e-commerce players, office products are in decline. As other reviewers have mentioned, both of these factors create a unique environment at Essendant. But the employees are gold. You will find a supportive community of coworkers that support and believe in each other. And you will find management that will support those who demonstrate the passion, willingness and talent to make things happen. With Essendant's recent leadership changes have come new, energetic and passionate leaders who believe in the company's mission to support independent businesses, and who bring a new style of agile, compassionate and inclusive leadership. On top of this, the benefits are good and the compensation is very competitive. If you can work in a challenging industry like this, Essendant is some place you will thrive.

    Cons

Being a large, public company means the business lives quarter to quarter.

    Advice to Management

Create a fun and energetic environment. Fan the flames of associates' passion and ambition.

I have been working at Essendant full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They are really good about working with you when time off is needed. You also get 2.5 weeks of paid time off to start which goes up every 5 years.

    Cons

Upper management has become quite dysfunctional over the past few years. There has been a steady decline in support and consistency. Also, people are quitting left and right and management still cannot figure out that they are the issue.

    Advice to Management

Start treating the employees as adults and peers not children. It would be more beneficial and make the employees want to stay if you were less focused on games and food and more focus on stats and people's work ethics.

    Cons

Not something that you can do for 20 years. Too much favoritism at play with the new managers.

    Pros

Monday through Friday! No weekends! Extensive training, lots of perks for sales reps, decent hourly pay. Lots of community service opportunities.

    Cons

Terrible health care benefits. Not a lot of growth opportunity. Don't always invest in long term employees but instead hire outside

    Advice to Management

    Stop rewarding mediocrity

I worked at Essendant full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people. The workers. That's what made that place.

    Cons

The pay/raises were a joke. No way to stay ahead in life. The most you could make was 3% and that was unheard of. Our boss would only give out 2% at the most.
The management style was from the 70's.
They treated employees like they owned them. Very fake environment.
The P2V system is from 1986 and not a natural thing for a human to be working with all day. Not good for your ears/hearing and not good for your soul.

    Advice to Management

    Give competitive raises.
Reward your hard working employees with good reviews.
Stop keeping all of your personal bonuses (blue diamond, Christmas, raise bonus) for yourself and spread them around to the people that got you there...the workers!
Stop talking to your employees like they're robots or slaves. They're people, just like you. There doesn't need to be an us against them mentality. Respect goes a long way.
