I worked at Essex County Council full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent leadership from management. They pushed me hard, but the support, feedback and the experience was fantastic. Great place to work.

    Cons

The public sector can be slow. Those who want to make immediate change might become frustrated.

    Advice to Management

The end of year reviews are long, verbose and time consuming. Cut down on the admin; you'll be more productive and have happier staff.

Lack of creative flexibility (though government "austerity" cuts have significant impact on this).
Lack of opportunity for sideways moves.
