A Company That Really Cares
May 29, 2020 - Payroll Specialist in San Mateo, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
I am so very proud of the way Essex has handled the Covid 19 pandemic. They really care about their residents and the community at large. Essex has instituted a very generous care program that will benefit those in need that our employees can participate in to help our tenants and the community. Upper management has done a superb job of keeping employees informed of new developments related to Covid and have been present to answer our questions. They have also done what they can to make it easier to work from home. I can honestly say I have felt 100% supported and I am looking forward to seeing how Essex will continue to serve the community while improving our use of technology to streamline and make all of our processes more efficient.
Cons
None come to mind. Essex is definitely going in the right direction!

Opportunities For Growth Are Endless, Good Benefits, Give E-Rewards For Jobs Well Done! Impressively Upper Management 'RPMs' Are Approachable And Are Always Willing To Help - They Provide On-Line Education - 2020 Was An Extremely Difficult Year For Leasing - This Company Rallied As A Whole And Held Weekly Zoom Meetings To Support Their Team/Properties - Amazing !
Cons
Hourly Is Not Comparable To Experience

From a current employee
Jan 25, 2022 - Assistant Community ManagerRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
I have enjoyed my time at Essex because of the relationships I have built within the company. Even during the pandemic, there was always a weekly Zoom meeting or engagement activity to stay connected. There are no uniforms and the dress code is rather casual. Very easy going employees and upper management.
Cons
Sick time is included in accrued PTO. Pay is okay. Not enough employees means you are often spread thin and overwhelmed.

Stay away!
Oct 19, 2016 - Property Manager in Valley Village, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
There are no pros! Upper Management is dishonest and expects you to be too. No integrity!
Cons
Low pay! Managers and maintenance go though residents apartment and steal items and sell it. Upper management in Woodland Hills are racists. They sexually harass you and dare you to snitch about.

Don't work here
Apr 8, 2017 - Leasing Manager in San Francisco, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
There are none to this company
Cons
This company is a dump primarily because of the people that they hire who aren't capable of thinking for themselves and are used to being followers instead of innovators. They still use yardi as their data base system, frequent server failures, they continue to lie to their residents about rent increases not to mention their lack of security for their residents whom suffer many loses due to break ins in the california region. Upper management is terrible at responding to non management employees almost nonexistent unless they are actually at that property. They talk about a family company but wouldnt know the meaning of family because they either layoff so many great employees or the employee leaves for another company because of all they are tired of their antics. Essex will always be begind the other property management companies because they dont value their employees or have any empathy for family life. They try to fool you and hire all races but they certainly descrimunate against the Indian culture making all types of condescending comments behind closed doors especially upon a move out in regards to bedbugs, that culture being filthy, and the way that indian people speak and conduct themselves. This company also looks down on below market rate prospective buyers/leasers if the property doesnt offer bmr they again make obscene comments. They continue to lie about ammenties that are supposed to be included but are broken for unacceptabke amounts of time. They are not connected with their residents nor do they listen to feedback but instead precieve it to be another annoying resident and those residents are then blackballed by the staff at staff meetings.Dont rent from this company or work here. The dalary us disrespectful when u actually see what the competitors are paying their staff to do the same duties you are at essex you will be overworked and underpaid. Hr is not in your favor either. Poor company with prehistoric logic and resources

Pros
Met some great people here but they all left. They're willing to spend on robust tools and resources. New corporate building.
Cons
Toxic environment. Internal politics impede anything from getting done. People get thrown under the bus, politick, scheme, and there's no trust in upper management. No transparency. The thing that stands out the most is that upper management knows this and does nothing. By not doing anything, that tells us they don't care. It also enables those who create the toxic environment. I remember someone getting berated in front of her team for asking a simple question. They hired a director of culture and he left months later. He was not replaced. Culture isn't an awards gala. The only culture here is to work 10 hours a day, weekends, on your vacation and not be recognized. A lot of good people have left. And will continue to.

Good environment but need to balance workload and compensation.
Nov 9, 2022 - Community Relations RepresentativeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Close knit teams with good support from local/direct supervisors. Good ideas with advancements in tech. Expanding and improving on work/life balance and improving benefits.
Cons
Clear paths for advancement have become murky and harder to attain. Only a limited number of management positions in a region from what was originally one at every community give or take multi sites. Seeing others with less experience in the industry and company promoted over others with clearer knowledge and experience. Rollouts for the new tech are not thoroughly tested or piloted before expanding to the rest of the company. Workload has been increased to balance multiple communities without a proper raise in compensation regardless of not touring and leasing. Sales are paid almost the same as Community Relations plus commission. While sales have an increased workload as well, a lot of mistakes are missed and passed on for Community Relations to address. There needs to be more thorough training for sales and even for Community Relations. 1 Portfolio Sales Manager can not train a new sales team member on 10 properties and still do their regular tasks. Feedback to upper management is escalated but not followed up on or no fixes are presented. Upper managementUpper managementUpper management needs a more in depth look at what their on site teams are dealing with on a regular basis. We pride ourselves on customer service but are having trouble keeping up with communications as they come in. This leaves us unable to do anything to really excel and stand out with our customer service by just staying afloat. Affordable Housing Programs are never considered when rolling out new initiatives.
