I have been working at Estrella Mountain Community College part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Working for a few hours each day is very nice. Also being able to request a shift off to study for a test is always excellent.

    Cons

You are only allowed to work less than 25 hours a week due to it being a work study position.

    Advice to Management

Make sure new employees are all trained properly.

I worked at Estrella Mountain Community College part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The learning is geared towards student-centered learning, and collaborative learning, not professor-centered learning (where the professor tells the student what they need to know). Professor's are allowed to drop student's who do not meet Estrella Mountain Community College's (EMCC's) course requirements. Professor's can utilize their bosses course, colleagues, or create their own curriculum, as long as it meets EMCC's course requirements. Paid training. Professional growth tuition. Outstanding center on computer learning, special programs used online/classroom, and multimedia tools. Excellent online adjunct orientation, and meet and greet orientation. Outstanding library, and helpful friendly staff! My boss was very realistic in regards to student complaints, and he was very approachable to all. Laptops were very helpful in the classroom.

    Cons

Students who believe you should only be checking for context, not spelling! Not all classrooms had laptops. Classrooms were assigned by division use, so you could sometimes end up walking across campus to another classroom, which took time away from student's who had additional questions or needed immediate assistance. It could easily be a 5 minute walk, and then you had to set up the room. Sometimes a professor would still be using the classroom against the rules, and you had to say something, which felt so unprofessional. Some full-time professors took advantage of adjunct professor's to help them with their grant projects. Some full-time professors abused the email system by bombarding the whole college with their events or pet projects.

    Advice to Management

Self-nominations for Professor of the Year is a joke! Remind staff to use the email "reply all" judiciously!

I worked at Estrella Mountain Community College (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Understanding managers
    Flexible schedule
Decent pay for the work needed
    Excellent work environment
Great values and principles in practice
    Fulfilling roles

    Cons

Lack of resources needed to fully fulfil the mission of Student Life
Management is overloaded with work, as a result the focus of the department shifts from bringing a homey, pro-active environment that should make students feel at home and have a fulfilling college experience rather than its current business-strict environment it currently focuses on for students due to administrative budget cuts and constant beuracracy working against Student Life.

    Advice to Management

Student Life can only do so much and does what it can for the students with what little they have to work with in the year, though the focus of the events presented to the audience who regulars the Union can improve. Administration is what holds the department back, as a result leaving the job of a Student Ambassador left with more clerical work than need be.

I worked at Estrella Mountain Community College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Wonderful work environment. Able to put together my own comprehensive program specifically geared to the students specific skill set. Great benefits and a fantastic retirement program.
Lots of opportunity for growth and continuing education. Excellent pay!

    Cons

I felt that the program could have benefited from more structured management .
The attitudes from some of the other instructors may have been improved by implementing a training program. When I began working I had no training at all. I was just kind of left to fly by the seat of my pants. Trial and error you might say.

    Advice to Management

Train your employee's! Make continuing education mandatory, since you offer that for free.
Follow up with their performance, including allowing students to evaluate their instructors, and give feedback as to their opinion of their performance. Good or bad, it offers the opportunity for improvement.

    Pros

Caring staff, beautiful and friendly campus, feels like a family. Schools sticks to and lives by both their mission and values. Employee's can see that the company stays committed to this in everything that it does.

    Cons

Very formal hiring process for full time work (because of district). Who you know wont do much for you in terms of moving up in the company. You have to have those minimum and desired qualifications for the position.

I worked at Estrella Mountain Community College full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice environment, students were great, technology was good.

    Cons

Really bad morale in every department. People were just there for a paycheck and had no real investment in helping students. Management practiced favoritism to cronies, ignored complaints, and contributed to low morale.

    Advice to Management

Value your employee's input, stop allowing department managers to take advantage of others, and give HR the empowerment to discipline and remove abusive managers.
