Work is stressful and overwhelming. Co-workers are excellent.

    Pros

Pay, annual bonuses, and co workers are the best

    Cons

Management knows of the stress and workload and “understands” it’s difficult but does nothing to help. Constant daily meetings over nothing meanwhile work load is adding up and calls are being missed for nothing.

    Pros

We get an opportunity to learn and implement new technologies

    Cons

You have to be in the right team in order to grow . The management always wants to cut costs so they dont need many people in the IT department so there is not much room for growth

    Pros

Some coworkers are cool. Some management is ok. Free coffee. Free popcorn.

    Cons

IT is either completely incompetent or crippled by budgetary issues, tech implementation is sad. Everything breaks constantly and there is no coordination to report issues timely. Everyone is so used to things breaking that no one bothers reporting it. Workload is variable, but often too high to be realistic. Training is a joke that even management seems in on, but no one bothers to correct. Metrics are inconsistent, for 2015 they changed one mid year when they realized it was an awful idea, but didn't bother apologizing for not listening to feedback in the first place. They're hiring people with 0 claims experience to handle mid level claims now, probably because everyone with claims experience in the area knows better than to go there. Culture is apologetic and a lot of 'I know this sucks but I can't do anything about it.' Management is poorly trained and will answer questions that carry a lot of importance incorrectly instead of admitting they need to look something up.

    Supervisor/helpdesk

Jun 19, 2014 - Supervisor in Sioux Falls, SD

    Pros

Anyone who's computer literate and eager to learn can work here. Middle management seems to care about employees. Most of them really impress me. Some seasoned employees. Ok benefits. They want to challenge their employees to challenge themselves. Highly competitive when looking to promote in some areas of the company. There are numerous ways to network yourself in a fast paced, rising company. Paying for the initial cost of getting licensed. Small bonuses at month end. Some incentives. Catering in the break room. Somewhat decent work/life balance after you put some time into the company. Possibly of a new challenge daily. You always learn something new. Employees suggestions has helped save the company a lot of time and hassle in some situations. Always somewhere you can promote to. Multiple locations nationwide. Sioux falls office is probably the best place to work out of all the others. Lots of different dept in one building allows for creative ideas to improve the company. They aren't there yet, but some of Management/Corp have good minds for where to go with the company. Management is always trying to find ways to help reps succeed and to also improve the company.

    Cons

There are people who are major players in the company who are making big decisions, who seemingly have no idea what it's like for the Dedicated employees who interact with customers. There are people making changes who have never had to sit and be verbally abused by a customer because of processes and daily pain points. That aside, I feel that nobody working in SA/TL spot is being paid a respectable wage compared to expectations (or other businesses in the area) At the very least a minimum starting wage of $15-$17 per hour in Sioux falls would be competitive to what I've been offered at other companies. SA alone handles a good number of major functions of the company. The company "revised" the pay structure, but all that means is you still don't get paid more based on expectations changing as frequently as they do. We do what we do, very well for the most part. It'd be nice to be recognized for that from time to time. I've been with the company for over 4 years and have been treated decently. Unfortunately, after looking at other jobs in different call centers, and other insurance companies, I've realized that we are very under paid for what we are asked to do. I have been hearing the same from other teammates as well. I'm sticking it out to see how the changes go. Not sticking around more than another year if pay doesn't improve.

    Micromanaged to Exhaustion

Mar 1, 2014 - Sales Agent II in Tampa, FL
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Esurance supports quite a few liberal ideals and liberal political and social agendas, and offers a casual-dress environment for employees. Employees are offered a work-at-home option after a certain duration of employment.

    Cons

Sadly, we've devolved from an organic culture to a mechanistic/hierarchial one over time. Work-related phone time is closely monitored, repeated emails are sent inquiring as to your whereabouts, and casual breaks outside predetermined times are discouraged and associates are disciplined. (For sales positions,) paid time off cannot be used at the associates discretion without consequence; it can be used only when the scheduling department allows it. Even in the case of medical emergencies or family matters, one receives a demerit aka 'occurance' if an associate deviates from their daily schedule (unless approved by scheduling.) It won't matter if you're the top salesperson; slack is very rarely given. That's great if you're a machine, but moderately inconvenient if you have a family or medical issues (non-FMLA related.) The sales monthly structure constantly changes and becomes more and more complex for an associate to track. It's nearly impossible to come even close to estimating what your month-end bonus will be, even by examining empirical sales data (that is, until almost the end of the month.) Opportunities for advancement are somewhat limited, and favoritism runs rampart during the promotion process. Merits are rarely examined and candidates are oftentimes chosen before the promotion process even begins (the promotion interview process being a formality for legal purposes.) We have assistant managers promoted here who have less than a year of Esurance employment and very limited previous sales and management experience. That's tough to justify if they haven't been given enough time to prove their worth before the 'promotion interviews' , don't you think? Overall, the culture is tolerable if you're only looking for short to medium-term employment. Unfortunately, Esurance isn't the best option for long-term opportunities, and support for bettering oneself through higher education is a tedious and expensive process if one chooses to utilize the tuition-reimbursement process. If you need something to 'tie you over' until you find something better, then try us out! Otherwise, it's best to steer clear and find a company that will better value you.

    Bleeding employees in San Francisco

Aug 15, 2016 - Manager in San Francisco, CA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

work/life balance. Great for being left alone and coasting forever, if you're into that.

    Cons

The company is a complete mess right now and it seems the many management ineptitudes over the past couple years are now bearing fruit. Repeated restructuring (there is a restructure every 6 months, some people are in their 4th or 5th team in two years), lower than market pay, and the hiring of some particularly inept people in senior management has caused massive employee turnover, specially in Marketing (one new VP has lost 5/6 of her managers), with the result that Marketing at least has almost completely emptied out, while turnover continues in other departments. So if you're seeing a ton of job openings right now, know why that is. There is also no career pathing or internal growth, as many people are in the same roles for 3-4+ years and not being promoted, while the company continues to rely on them for critical support. However if you announce you are leaving, you will be immediately offered higher pay and a better role. Merit raises were non-existent for 2016. The company has directives from Allstate to control expenses and is therefore having to underpay employees, which is partly causing a lot of the above.

    Esurance Response

    Vice President of Human Resources

Thank you for your candid feedback. Our associates’ wellbeing and success is a key priority to Esurance and we are committed to creating a rich and engaging experience for our associates by continuing to review and improve our practices and policies. Our pay and benefits are competitive in the market and we monitor this on a regular basis. We focus on development through training and career progression through our internal apply process where 30% of our openings are filled by internal candidates. We know that despite our good efforts, there may be instances where the experiences vary based upon the business situations. The associate experience that you described is not what we want for any associate and we encourage our associates to bring matters to local human resources so that we may address emerging issues. We would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you to address your concerns. Thank you again for your comment.

Glacial paced advancement: A career ender

Sep 10, 2012 - Anonymous Employee in San Francisco, CA

    Pros

Some of the people are nice to work with. You meet people from many different cultures. The company is becoming more well known since the Allstate purchase. There is coffee and tea in the kitchen.

    Cons

The most talented people leave the company either because the work environment is too stifling or because they can't advance in their career at a reasonable pace. Ask what the turnover rate is for a team before joining the company. It's a well known and accepted fact that management is very stingy with promoting.
