Painful legacy system, software devs Run!!

    Pros

You are not the only one who will feel the code base and technologies are centuries behind . The whole engineering team feels the same way. So you are not left out. Thats the only PRO, if you would call it one.

    Cons

    1. Legacy system that was written in 2003 when esurance was a startup. It has not been revamped in the last 16 years. 2. Upper management has no wish to revamp the code base 3. You won't learn a thing since no one in the director, senior manager and manager and principal developer roles know anything 4. People in the above mentioned roles just grew old with the software. They have been working in Esurance for eternity (read 10+ years) and add to the doom 5. Team morale is very low because everyone hates how fragile and archaic the system is and no one has any direction on fixing it 6. There is absolutely no guidelines as to how the company will go ahead technologically speaking. 7. The system is so crappy, if you fix one line of code, be certain you are going to break something else unintentionally 8. They have so many contractors who have littered the system with code wherever they could put in. Not to blame them, there is no architecture to this system. 9. They are a company in SanFrancisco pretending to be a cool tech company but the truth is they are an insurance company and as long as they make money the management is NEVER going to push towards a better technology 10. The code base is a monolithic crap no one ever finds interesting to work on. Horrible place, YOU MUST RUN!

    VP Software Development

I’m sorry that you had such a poor experience. We have concerted efforts to improve our production code base that supports a business that is profitable and growing, and we are in the early stages of moving to a container-based, microservices architecture to enable us to adapt to our changing industry. I have encouraged anyone and everyone to reach out to me with their thoughts and ideas to help shape our future, so it is unfortunate that your concerns were not addressed. Your passion is evident, and I regret that you have chosen to take it elsewhere. Al

    Pros

Free coffee. Free fruits. Free snacks (sometimes).

    Cons

Legacy systems that generate all sorts of problems - fix an issue just to create more issues! What a joke to pretend that it’s a tech company! Heavy workload but low pay. Benefits are so-so. Also play by favoritism. Never care about work quality. Employee turnover rate is high. Morale is low. The core values like “learn and grow”, “lead always”, “get it done”, “wear customers’ shoes” are just slogans.

    Director, Human Resources

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I am sorry to hear that your experience here has been so negative, this is not what we want for any associate. We consistently evaluate our compensation and benefits to ensure that we remain competitive. We also work hard to support a high performance culture where people who deliver on results, in a way that embodies are core values, are recognized. Our leaders are very focused on listening to associates' ideas and concerns, we just wrapped up our most recent town halls where our leaders visited our offices to hear first hand how things are going. I would really appreciate a chance to talk to you to better understand your concerns and frustrations. I can assure you that you will be heard.

A company born online now seems way behind

Nov 13, 2015 - Engineer in Oakland, CA

    Pros

There are some talented people working here. The location and benefits were good but other than that, I really can't think of any more Pros working here.

    Cons

Behind the technical curve in both ideals and tech itself. The politics are extremely unnerving, so beyond measure it actually suffocates innovative collaboration. Politics also cast efficiency as a rarity. Interdepartmental collaboration seems stifled. Upper Management seems content with all that goin gon below them, plays against the morale it seems.

Esurance has potential but has a long way to go.

    Pros

If you are in the IT department of Esurance, the salary is terrific. Another nice thing about the company is it is very involved in charitable causes, has a very diverse group of employees and is truly a very "green" company. The employees work very hard and are very supportive of each other; the management below Director-level also is mostly competent and supportive to their staffs. It could be a really great place to work if a few things were different.

    Cons

The IT senior management (Directors and above) are erractic, disrespectful and completely demoralizing. Their attempts to establish processes and introduce methodologies have been ridiculous and have actually led to a more chaotic environment, for many reasons. They do not set clear expectations, they do not follow the processes they try to dictate, and they don't bother to get buy-in from affected business groups before they announce a new process so they end up creating a political firestorm every time they try to make a move they think will improve operations. Other minor downsides include a dress code that is too stringent, and work environment where cubes are small and low, which makes for a very distracting environment that impedes productivity. Morale is very low and people are leaving in droves.

    Pros

Really no pros here. The only pro i can think of is that is backed uo by Allstate as an established company with much more experience.

    Cons

No support for employees. Bad management. It's all about taking credit for themselves while others do the heavy lifting. Low morale. Fear of retaliatiin. Some kind of discrimination. Managers wait until last minute to say what's wrong instead of empowering and encouraging employees to perform better and advance. Practically no opportunities for advancement. Practically no perks.

    Pros

Large company back by a reputable organization in Allstate. Decent pay for the type of work being done. Extremely flexible when it comes to your schedule and balancing your work/personal life.

    Cons

Moving up in the company is possible, but only if you are willing to play 'corporate tattle tale' Upper management seems to have little experience and it is very apparent in their decision making. This makes it quite difficult to maintain high morale

    Lack Luster

Oct 11, 2017 - Licensed Customer Service Advocate in Sioux Falls, SD

    Pros

Work at Home options, 401K, Employee Benefits (aside from the medical insurance rates and no gym membership help), Co-workers are awesome, pay is somewhat fair but not the best, Esurance has a great concept for the direction they are headed as a company, the management and supervisors on the service level are awesome and understanding, as they also are enduring the 'reorganization'.

    Cons

Staffing, Attendance Policy, Insurance Rates, Schedules, Morale, Fear of job security, Slow/bugged Systems At one point, I actually loved my job, however, deeper that AllState penetrates into the company, the worse it's getting. Our health insurance rates have increased by over $5000 in the past 2-3 years. Family deductibles are now $4000, Out of Pocket Max $6000. The attendance policy is getting less and less family friendly. Training used to be stellar and now is starting to fizzle. Morale is less than mediocre. Shifts are becoming difficult to maintain. They did major layoffs in May and are now hiring. It feels like it is their way of getting all of the seasoned reps to quit out of fear of job security and maintaining their schedule so they can bring in lower paid reps with more desperation who will work worse hours. A typical day is talking to customers who are disappointed, although there are a few who you can make happy, it's emotionally draining. The systems are slow and make doing daily tasks aggravating. The company is now trying to win the hearts of it's employees with free snacks and swag in a poor attempt to reconcile their failures.

    Pros

Good people on the floor. No broker fees.

    Cons

Ever changing environment that brought down company morale. Commission changes affected the top producers, not the middling ones. I understand Allstate bought out the company, but we lost some of the mojo after that.

    Branch Sales Manager

Thank you for your feedback. We agree that we have great people in our offices and one of our key priorities is inspired associates. We understand that this includes fair and competitive compensation including incentive. Our goal is to align our incentive plan with the behaviors we ask our people to demonstrate and compensate them fairly for doing so. We understand change isn't easy and as such only make changes when absolutely necessary. We are always sourcing our associates for feedback and take that feedback into account when making any adjustments. Thank you for your feedback.

IT Dev - H1B turmoil, very political

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Great location in SF financial district and free refreshments available at SF office.

    Cons

There is no chance for growth unless you are a suck-up or bootlicker. Low pay, expectation to work 24/7. Low employee morale and productivity as all sticking out until the immigration clears. Managers keen in the fat paycheck/huge bonus and overworking the teams. Managers don't take no as an answer from subordinates and will never say no to their seniors. Most managers are long tenured employees promoted within with outdated skills. Senior management repeatedly fails to understand how software development works, there is only focus on how the end result will be bug free. Highly political environment. No effort to get it done right. Plenty finger pointing. No clear accountability. No good decision taken by Senior management to fix or understand any issues.
