I worked at Everything But The House full-time

    Pros

Tough, but interesting industry. Met a lot of great people. Great experience for my resume.

    Cons

Couldn’t take the uncertainty anymore and had to move on. Continual misdirection from management. Unrealistic quotas. EBTH has a knack for hiring and promoting “Yes” managers. So much time and money wasted on leaders who lacked experience, knowledge and common sense. A positive attitude is key, but owners failed to see their shortcomings and kept promoting them. Launching new markets before you worked out the kinks was a ridiculous waste of time and money. You never recovered from drinking the Hollywood Kool-Aid. Leaders were star struck. Really? Party in the Hamptons, Diane Keaton book launch...outrageous salaries and expense accounts for the LA office... Leaders did not grasp the individuality of each market and the challenges of navigating big cities.

    Advice to Management

Advice to the new owner....clean house and start fresh. EBTH gave too much power to the ”Yes” Manager’s. They were afraid to contradict what they knew were bad decisions, as they wanted to keep being overpaid. Hire true leaders who know how to make the tough decisions and form a team, not a clique. Pay your frontline workers a fair, living wage. Forget stock incentives-worthless. Scott Griffith was the best thing that happened to EBTH. It was painful for a lot of employees who lost their jobs, but at least he saw through the BS and looked at it as a business. It was just too late. You won’t make it without someone who has a brilliant business sense. Figure out how to run profitably and then expand. PS...coerced/fake positive reviews are so obvious. Always one-liners.

I have been working at Everything But The House full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Cool concept for a business. Had great coworkers.

    Cons

No organization. Terrible warehouse and upper management. Received a pitiful 17 cent raise with no room for negotiation. Felt that I was managing way more than what I was being compensated for. Had massive layoffs more than once. Did not feel like the company cared about me or my coworkers. Felt very strung along during the layoff process.

I have been working at Everything But The House full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Learned additional skills to photograph high quality items. Friendly and easy going work place.

    Cons

Things were organized poorly and had to drive far distances to homes. Company completely switched business strategy leading to all branches having to close down and hundreds of people lost their jobs.

    Advice to Management

Set up communications with shipping companies to make shipping items cheap if not free. Expand into other areas and not just focus on materials inside an individuals home.

I have been working at Everything But The House full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The people. The nature of the work. The feeling of being a part of something that has never been done before. For the generalist as well as the specialist, an awesome opportunity to research and write on a daily basis, and to share knowledge as well as to learn from the experience of others.

    Cons

Pay that requires team members to have second jobs or gigs. A lack of hands-on experience within the auction industry on the part of upper management. The uncertainty of life as a startup (including painful layoffs), which I now understand better than before. One can dream of success and glory and being the biggest player in the biz, but is that the right dream to have? Or is that the road to disaster?

    Advice to Management

The challenges of scaling up were much more difficult than upper management and investors anticipated. The huge expenditure generated by the establishment of the DC/CPC and a rapid expansion that focused on scale at the expense of quality created a financial burden difficult for the new management team to lift. There is money to be made in the sale of secondhand goods, but it is a labor-intensive endeavor, and must be done carefully. A smaller core of well-trained and better-paid workers processing items worth the time it takes to present them online would be ideal. The current management team has made incredible strides in increasing efficiencies and has been true to its word in communicating strategy, goals and outcomes to employees on a regular basis. Maybe the mountain was too high, but current employees are ready to keep working and believe in the company more than ever.
