    Pros

In the biotech area of SSF
People float in and out so you might make a good contact for a job somewhere else
    You can dress casual
    Decent benefits (but not great)
Chance for stock profits (esp. the ESPP)

    Cons

In Clinical Operations the management are mostly pulled from prior bench science positions and know NOTHING about how to manage clinical studies, so timelines are based on stock price solely. They try to rely on CROs but do not know how to manage them and will not support the necessary oversight, particularly if it involves travel.
Persons with experience leave quickly as avenues for advancement are blocked, since all the upper management positions are filled by persons with no operations experience.
Due to the fact that lab scientists were brought to operations at the same grade most titles are incongruent with experience and your team will not be able to support you any better than mangement. This incompetence extends to data management, clinical science and operations, which lead to poorly designed studies overall.
The incongruent titles in this company are known throughout the bay area and listing this company on your CV can be a liabilty when looking for other jobs in the SF area.

    Advice to Management

Higher persons to run the operations and science group who have at least 15 to 20 years industry experience in this field or you will continue to fail at meeting the milestones you have set and agreed to meet.

    Pros

The work is fast-paced and very interesting. My colleagues treat me and each other with respect. Competence rules, with little or no deadwood. Senior management has my full trust and respect. I believe they are doing a great job of moving the company forward and that we will ultimately be successful with multiple compounds. Benefits are excellent, with lots of support for work/life balance. Just a great place.

    Cons

The company is still pre-commercial; there is no revenue stream other than that from partners. Despite the relatively large pipeline, the company could still fail if multiple trials go badly or much too slowly.

    Advice to Management

Go faster! I know its not realistic given how fast we move already, but everyone wants to see our compounds move through the clinic as quickly as possible.

I worked at Exelixis full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I worked with truly great people who formed a community filled with optimism and hope for a great future for Exelixis.

    Cons

Unfortunately, that future did not come to pass.

    Advice to Management

"Fish rots from the head down"

I have been working at Exelixis (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good mid-level experience, people were nice

    Cons

As with many other pharmaceuticals- a drug tanks, and the company must cut. It was unfortunate but Exelixis had to lay off 2/3 of their workforce, when i was there...

    Advice to Management

Invest in R&D- one compound can keep the workforce personnel "living on the edge"- very bad for culture

    I worked at Exelixis full-time

    Cons

    Pros

Company has a drug Cabozantinib in Phase III trials that could potentially be a blockbuster.
People are very friendly and easy to work with.

    Cons

This has been a transformative period for the company with massive layoffs, especially in Research. This has lead to low morale.
Could be further layoffs in the future, depending on company priorities.

    Advice to Management

Continue to recognize the existing employees using the excellence awards to improve employee morale.
