I have been working at Expedia full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great culture. Employees are passionate about travel and like to create great travel experiences for the customers. Good work-life balance. This is the first place I've worked where the executives and senior leaders genuinely advocate for using all of your vacation time to travel and see things. People are smart and capable.

    Cons

The company is caught between being an online travel agent and a technology company. They do not yet provide the perks of a lot of more innovative tech companies - the compensation isn't as good, stock/equity is not part of the compensation structure, the benefits are not great, the engineering environment is not as open, innovation is slow and isn't encouraged as much, self-exploration isn't encouraged as much, etc.

It's also a fairly political environment where people pay too much attention to their political posture.

The company can improve customer service. Not just in the call centers, but how they think about making things simpler and better for customers, and driving their partners (the hotels, airlines, car rental companies, etc) to be better, which provide notoriously poor customer experience.

    "Great place for B performers"

I have been working at Expedia full-time

    Pros

Easy to excel if you know what you're doing
Politics is out in the open, making it easy to know where you (and others) stand
Lack of attention and accountability from upper management makes it easy to coast

    Cons

If you're not a B player, you'll get bored by the uninspiring work
Easy to advance (just play the political game), but generally hallow victories
Managers are more interested in size of their organization than meaningfulness of work; every public speech by senior management includes stats about their org size
More emphasis on how you're perceived than on doing the right thing - leads to lack of transparency and lots of playing the blame game

    Advice to Management

There has long been an internal debate whether we are a travel company or a tech company. Senior leadership messages that we are a tech company, but we are clearly not. We are a joke for serious technical talent in the Seattle area. We act like a travel company that employs IT staff to provide a scalable way to sell travel and should position ourselves as such.

I worked at Expedia (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Working at a travel company, you are able to get some great perks besides typical health benefits. Perks include discount on hotel room bookings.

    Cons

Strong performers were not always recognized and rewarded. It seems like individuals who were more outspoken and who touted their "merit" would get promoted.

    Advice to Management

Create an objective review process. Reward those who demonstrate results rather than those who are loudest.

I have been working at Expedia full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Awesome culture - team of extremely talented individuals working hard towards a common goal.
Benefits that show Expedia really cares. Top not time off policy, Charitable giving matching, fitness reimbursement.
Market competitive compensation. Rewards for performance.

    Cons

I wish it was a pet friendly environment so that I could bring my pets to work if needed. Also, a location more central to downtown Seattle would be preferred, but that is a personal preference.

I worked at Expedia full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The pure brilliance of the engineering teams is amazing but the leadership team is completely clueless.

    Cons

Bad leadership, 5 re-orgs a year and sub-par recognition of talent

    Advice to Management

Please get your act together and fire most of the leaders especially in IT

    Pros

Good leadership and lots of fun outside of work.

    Cons

As with most companies its size, there is a fair bit of politics and posturing. And there are a few bad apples. As long as one understands that this is the nature of the beast, and one just has to learn to deal with it...it is not a problem

    Advice to Management

Raise salaries or you will lose a lot of good people

    Pros

    Great health and travel benefits
    Very intereting marketplace
You work with some very smart folks
The service you provide helps people have great expereinces
    Very strong brand recognition

    Cons

    Work-life balance is challanging
    Pace of innovation has slowed
    Old technology
    Direction changes with wind

    Advice to Management

Reduce time sucking meetings and let people focus on getting work done. Expedia got to be number one through innovation, need to figure out how to allow for customer facing innovation. It seems little has changed on the front end w/respect to user innovation over the past 5+ years. Most other online travel companies have cought up on the tech side, and some have surpassed Expedia.
