Former Employee - EMT in Compton, CA
    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Explorer -1 Ambulance & Medical Services full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The owner seems to only hire brand new fresh out of school EMT's. You also get to work with the best equipment and friendly co workers. There is also 911 experience working back up with Compton fire. Not a real contract you still get that chance to be a first responder.

    Cons

All the true reviews has said it before. The owner is a dictator in his own mind. He does not have the patients best interest in mind. He says it but his actions are louder. You will be late for a schedule pick up just so he can show you how to clean his station properly. With the owner it's all about the money and your short paychecks prover it. All day you hear him talk about the direction he wants to take the... company in and how he will improve things but it never happens. While on a call you will run into former employees who will tell you the same horrors you are going through as you work there. Nothing has changed No matter how much you clean or how well you do your job it will never be good enough. There is a reason why he only hires new EMT's with no experience. He wants to control and manipulate anyone he can. I did my best to only do my job and to help my co workers but he still found a way to "flex" and prove he was in control of everything. There will never be a time clock or a proper way to record how many hours you work. He will call you at 10p.m. to tell you to come in at 2a.m. and yell if your sleepy. If you are owed OT he will call it a bonus and take $5 off of what is owed an hour. When things are going good he will treat you like crap and say "I don't need you, I'll run this by myself" (but for some reason he calls up former employees asking if they can work weekends). When things get tough he will buy you lunch, say how hard you work and basically do whatever he can to "butter you up". There are events that you will have to work that are "mandatory" and if he wants he will call it "community service" and not pay you for it. Anything the owner who calls himself the "head ems chief" (probably because he was fired from the fire department before ever coming close to that rank) wants to do he will. In conclusion if you went and became a certified emergency medical technician so you can spend most your days at Explorer 1 cleaning them this job is for you. If not try somewhere else.

    Advice to Management

The best thing for your company "Chief" is to have a management system. You can't have a dispatcher and tell them what to do all day that defeats the purpose. Get an FTO for some proper training, and a supervisor so that you can exclude yourself from the day to day work and have a successful company. Also once an employee quits because janitorial work isn't what they signed up for or they don't enjoy being yelled... at by you or never thanked for a job well done, please stop talking about former employee who did nothing except leave your clutches. Making rumors and saying negative things about them only makes yourself look bad for being bitter and gossiping like a teenage girl.

I have been working at Explorer -1 Ambulance & Medical Services

    Pros

You get a lot of experience in 911 and IFT calls.

    Cons

Some of the changelles is you are working more than you get paid. You work 24 hours only get paid for 16 and if you work a day car you get paid for 10 hours when you was there 16 hours. On paid day he pays you late in the evening and some employees checks was always short. On a few occasion checks bounced. You have to stay for mandatory meeting and you dont get paid for the time you are in the meeting. You must... volunteer or he will fire you. He is basis to females. When you are at station you are doing station duties all day and night. He takes money out of your check when items get broke even if you had nothing to do we the situation. You are held over for hours and for some days. He had you running his personal errands and doing things outside of your job duties like painting sanding walls delivering newspaper. He is always talking down to all his employees.

    Advice to Management

All operations should be turned over to someone with better people skills. He should sit in his office and do paperwork. Or he should just sell the company and do something else.
