I have been working at Express-News full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Amazing employees and management, lots of room for career growth. Very helpful support on the back-end. Quality products, best in the industry. Good reputation as a company. Located in the middle of downtown.

    Cons

Works with extremely tight budgets. Shouldn't have to work so hard to print in color. The company doesn't pay for parking despite having the money for it, sold parking lots. Forces you to park on street or park in alternative lots without compensation.

Editorial is a little too liberal, gets in the way of selling advertising.

Pay is below industry average and its very easy to not make enough to make a mortgage payment or student loan payment

    Advice to Management

Great changes have been made, but try to increase the base pay to $45k. Making employees pay $50-100/mo to park for the privilege of working isn't cool.

Change commissions to be bi-weekly instead of monthly

    Pros

None what so ever. Good entry level job other than that, no pros

    Cons

Working with TERRIBLE management, if they do not like you, they will find any reason to fire you. No leadership what so ever.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees better and treat them like HUMANS. Do your job and don't blame employees on your crappy managing skills

    I worked at Express-News full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I was in charge of drivers and their customers concerns.

    Cons

I wasn't allowed a day off. I drove about 8 hrs a day because even if all of my districts 25 drivers and their routes were covered I was forced to fill in and deliver papers for other districts routes.

    Advice to Management

If you can't hire more people, change the way you're delivering paper.

    I worked at Express-News full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Because San Antonio still has an older demographic, people in the town still buy a physical paper. That's a rare thing in this day of mostly internet readers.

    Cons

There's been no raises in over nine years, and none are forthcoming. When people leave, it's rare that someone is hired to replace them; they just spread the work to other people.

    Advice to Management

Have the Hearst Corp. allocate some money from their other (profitable!) divisions to support the newspaper business that built your empire in the first place.

steady work in the copy room; good supervisors.

    Cons

work in the evening from 330 to 1130, and Tuesday and Wednesday off, temp status so no bennies.

I have been working at Express-News full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There are still opportunities to write good, important stories. Occasionally.

    Cons

Most of the time of reporters and editors is spent feeding the premium website that has no readers. Management has bled the print product dry and now it's a pathetic shell of its former self. No raises in 8 years, only more work spread out among fewer people. Our top editors are good journalists but they're not leaders and they tolerate too much micromanaging by mid-level editors. This paper is a great place for a young journalist to stay for a couple of years and get great experience, but it's not a place to make a career. More experienced journalists can either let themselves be taken advantage of or find someplace that treats employees with respect and pays them decently.

    Advice to Management

Be honest with employees and stop trying to tell them that the paper is about to turn the corner financially. Be honest with yourselves and admit that the organization has a problem retaining talent. Learn to lead with a sense of vision and do more than just lurch from day to day. If you keep squeezing employees, the steady exodus will continue.

    I worked at Express-News full-time

    Pros

It was tough to find 20 words worth of good things to say about this company. Lots of pot luck lunches and snacks... Go work here if you have no where else to go... Or if you really like junk food. The problem with newspapers is not the content or the audience- it's the people, always the people...

    Cons

If you are looking for a forward thinking, profitable, growing organization - keep looking. base and comp is low and plan is outdated. Mgmt doesn't care about employees (unless you've been there for 30 yes then they're worried you'll sue them, so those folks- even if they are terrible- have complete job security). Leadership is full of infighting and politics which cripple their ability to get anything done if they even had a clue (which is rare). Nepotism - rampant. Processes designed 50 yrs ago are still in place after not working for the last 40. Zero support from the mgt team. The culture and values they tout are a joke.

    Advice to Management

enjoy. Your failures and poor decisions ran this company into the ground.

    Pros

Exciting journalism in a competitive market. Good opportunity to build skills, especially for those with new media and multimedia skills.

    Cons

Layoffs and salary freezes for many editorial staffers since 2008.

    Advice to Management

Identify and recognize employees you want to keep

    I worked at Express-News full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I haven't worked for the Express-News for 16 years but the scroll down bar doesn't go that far back. It was a wonderful learning experience working there. My managers were patient, kind and fair.

    Cons

Newspapers are becoming a thing of the past. They eliminated the creative department years ago so applying as an artist would be futile. They outsource all their work now.

    Advice to Management

    Good luck to you all.
