I worked at Extendicare full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Plenty of overtime and situated in a small town.

    Cons

Zero moral boosting, too many mandates, little pay and an overwhelming workload. At the time of employment it was 10/hr start and a yearly 1% pay raise; hopefully rate of pay was increased due to the responsibilities of the job

    Advice to Management

Higher pay, additional help on the floor, and provide moral boosters.

I worked at Extendicare part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I worked at Golden Valley Rehab and Care Center (GVRCC). Employees were generally easy to work with and pleasant to each other. There is a lot of opportunity for self growth and education in patient care and leadership skills d/t employee and patient diversity if you're the type of person to take advantage of and soak in all that is going on around you and learn from it. Floating to different areas is common so if you like a change of pace, you'll never be bored.

    Cons

Management was difficult to work with. Staffing to patient ratios were horrendous at times and patients often paid the price for lack of the excellent care they deserved. Most of the staff didn't have any respect for who was the DON at that time (rightfully so) so there was massive break down of communication and team work on upper level issues.

    Advice to Management

Patients need to come first. Listen to your employees. Be kind. Smile more.

    Pros

Great line staff, facility dietary staff are very good at their jobs, good people on staff - the two facility administrators I met were really good-hearted people

    Cons

Corporate management is full of knee-jerk reactive tendencies and generally tends to talk down to administrators. Policies can often be de-humanizing and there is a general denial of the human condition in favor of efficiency.

    Advice to Management

Slow down and consider all sides more often. Go on a corporate retreat and slow down to try to get away from the reactionary management style towards a proactive style. Try hard to respect your subordinates.

    Pros

Great training provided to upper management

    Cons
