I have been working at Exterran full-time for more than 6 years

      Pros

Benefits are decent. Can't say a lot of good as of late. The company has so many people in management that there's no one to do the work

      Cons

With downturn, morale and caring about the employees has gone downhill. Upper management cannot agree on anything. The offices are stuffy and filled with people in fear.

      I worked at Exterran

      Pros

Pay, but what oil and gas company doesn't pay well? Small company so you can see the upper management. That's about it for pros.

      Cons

Top heavy, they don't let managers manage, nothing ever gets done because no one is held accountable, extremely poor systems, they don't want to put in the money to get the results they ask for, they don't invest into their employees, you're looked at as a head count and not a member of the overall team, upper management never accomplishes anything, managers in all disciplines...

      Advice to Management

Give your managers the power to make management decisions and then hold them accountable. Stop micromanaging them and do your freaking job. Invest into your team and help them grow and be better. Stop looking at everyone as a head count.

I worked at Exterran full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

Exterran is a really good place to start out or develop an engineering career. There are plenty of opportunities to train and develop yourself. Upper management seems to be okay with pushing for training (but only when times are good). (Used to have) Good benefits

      Cons

Top heavy - upper management get all the protection and lower level people are screwed No chance at career advancement - they always hire from the outside for top level management so forget about internal promotions (they are misinforming you if they say that you can climb the corporate ladder)

      Advice to Management

Please learn to value the people who work for you - promote them instead of getting outside "experts"

I worked at Exterran for more than a year

      Pros

The salary was fairly decent, the benefits were competitive.

      Cons

Management was a disaster. Some of the leadership team managed by bullying their employees. There was no room for fresh ideas or collaboration. Upper management had unreasonable expectations for many employees, especially new employees. Company overall was not organized, did not communicate, played favortism, and was disfunctional from day one. My advice would be, don't...

      Advice to Management

Stop bullying employees, stop trying to intimidate employees, focus on what that newly hired employee can bring to the organization. Mentor and train the new employees and stop acting like a company from the 1950's and act like an organization from this era. It's a mess.

I worked at Exterran full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

Promotions are available for managers that work hard and prove their value. Pay is industry standard for oil/gas. Pretty flexible schedule. Most places I was familiar with had an excellent team of coworkers

      Cons

New upper management making a lot of changes since the company split. Silo org structure isn't very efficient and it shows in the day to day business. Normal stressful manufacturing environment.

      Pros

Competitive salary & benefits. Enjoyable work environment.

      Cons

Glass ceiling between middle management and upper management. Seems like PEOPLE is not a #1 priority of the company.

      Advice to Management

Listen to those that report to you. People who have been in the industry for years might just know what they are talking about. You cannot always bring process and procedures from other companies/industries and make the fit in this business. LISTEN to those that report to you!!!

I worked at Exterran for more than 6 years

      Pros

Employees are generally high-quality and hard-working. Depending on your department, there may be room to grow. The company is now about seven years old and seems to be developing a more formal work culture.

      Cons

Some financial instability in the past and cost cutting seemed to lead to lower earning potential. Since Brad Childers took the helm, there has been a perceived increase in the income gap between the officers and everyone else. Upper management seems to be more focused on increasing earnings and cutting costs in the past--a good thing--but the culture may have suffered somewhat...

      Advice to Management

More sharing by employees between departments would be beneficial. In any large organization, information can get lost between people, but Exterran is especially fragmented.
