I worked at ExxonMobil as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

I really enjoyed my co-op with ExxonMobil in their chemicals division. They give you a great deal of autonomy with your projects and they give you real work to do as well. It was a great learning experience with really good pay, and they treat you very well as an intern. ExxonMobil is a great place to work with a lot of opportunities for career progression and continuous education. I also found it to be a collaborative environment with strong upper management to drive company success. Overall, it was probably the best intern experience you can get as a chemical engineer in college. It's also a solid place to work for many years because of the high salary, benefits, pension plan, and work-life balance (later in career).

    Cons

There are so many systems in place whether it is safety or management of change that things move incredibly slowly. Also, due to employees changing jobs every 2 years, there is no sense of ownership in a lot of projects and some things just never get done or take much longer than they should.

The company also lacks some perks that most other companies enjoy like more flex days or vacation days. 2 weeks vacation for the first 5 years is not enough. Contact engineers (entry level) routinely worked 60+ hours a week and some weekends which can lead to burnout and job turnover.

    Advice to Management

There is a method to the madness so I would keep doing what you are doing. I think it would serve the company well to be more agile and up-to-date in the technology that is used in downstream and chemicals businesses, since almost all the technology I was using was 10-20 years old.

More work-life balance or variety in job roles in the downstream and chemicals side would be nice too. I really hated how almost engineer that started at ExxonMobil would spend their 20s in the same location (BR, Baytown, Beaumont) when they are probably best suited for travel since they are young and have no kids yet.

Also, I think it would serve the company well to increase their perks in their manufacturing plants to compete with companies like Chevron, Google, Facebook. The salary that is offered to entry-level employees is high but 2 weeks vacation for the first 5 years is barely anything. Look at increasing flex days or add 1 more week after 3 years, so you can retain more than 50% of engineers after 3 years (when 401k is kept) or 5 years (pension).

I have been working at ExxonMobil full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Wonderful people and company culture. Feels as company really values its people. Strong sense of security during recent down turn

    Cons

Pay is noticeable less than competitors, very antiquated performance evaluation process, struggles to value experienced hires, rigid dress code for men

    Advice to Management

Current ranking process needs to go as it does not adequately recognize and promote top performers.

I have been working at ExxonMobil full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great pay and benefits! Company matches 7% when you put in 6% into savings plan. You get more time off than with regular jobs and can swap your holidays giving you even more days.. I get about 5-6 weeks off a year. Company truly values employees and tries to take care of them. Really great reputation!

    Cons

Shift work which might be hard on some people but I love it! Job is not for the accident prone.

    Advice to Management

Being bogged down with paper work and numerous tasks to help implement safety is not always the best approach. I find it stresses out people who have been there many years and they aren't able to concentrate on training up new employees and give them their wisdom because there is always some safety paperwork to do, or meeting. It'd be best for them to pass their knowledge and expertise to the next people so the units can continue to run smoothly!
