I have been working at ExxonMobil full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    —Very good compensation
—change job roles every 2-3 years to get broad range of experience
—strong match on 401k in addition to a free pension
    —good job security

    Cons

    —very conservative company culture
—not very LGBTQ friendly company culture
—very limited work locations in US (Houston-TX, Beaumont-TX, Baton Rouge-LA, Joliet-IL) and not very desirable cities to live in
—rating/ranking system is not transparent at all
—business decisions take a long time as there are many levels of approvals needed to do anything

I have been working at ExxonMobil full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good salary, benefits, and job security, opportunities within different functions of the business (3-5 year job rotations), top-of-the industry training program, highly collaborative work environment, workplace flexibility becoming more the norm

    Cons

The forced ranking system is in complete opposition to creating dynamic team-centric problem solving--your ranking (and salary) become benchmarked on your performance in the first two years; the company is slow to accept the changing work demographic; abysmal family leave benefits

    Advice to Management

It's time to change your performance evaluation system and implement an industry-leading family leave policy. The new generation of "best-and-brightest" will go elsewhere unless the company changes from its archaic "this is what we've always done" attitude.

-Not much room to try new ideas

I worked at ExxonMobil full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Steady pay, insurance, meet a lot of people on campus.
Gym is good. Pension plan. Employees clubs and resource groups for minorities.

    Cons

Not a lot of upward mobility in Controllers for US staff minorities. Very few executives.
    Few opportunities to travel internationally.
Hard to find a manager who is not upward focused more then developing his people or will defend your good name.
Extremely long hours working with outdated equipment and tools. Chronic understaffing. Not comparable to other companies.
    No raises for years.

    Advice to Management

Not everyone who leaves was disgruntled. Maybe if you payed competitive to the market for Controllers I would not have left for a competitor. $20k higher for the same job, 9/80s and being able to leave on time and not log in at home every day will beat your bogus pension plan any day. Thank you for the experience. I can now clearly say I know what I do not like.

    Pros

    Structured promotions ladder, job stability

    Cons

Difficult to reach upper levels of management without sacrificing family life.

    Advice to Management

Be careful with gendered feedback, penalizing women for not presenting traditionally masculine traits (i.e. assertiveness, over-confidence) is a product of socialization, not indicative of poor performance.
