    Pros

The company is a 5th generation family owned company, and a leader in its industry. Schumacher's products have a long history, one that is intertwined with the history of our country. The people at F. Schumacher & Co. are wonderful, positive and work hard. Due to the fact that Schumacher is a fifth generation family owned company, the workplace environment is very warm, there is a strong work ethic as well as a commitment to upholding strong values.

    Cons

Opportunity for promotion is a bit low at the moment. In December the company hired a new CEO, and management is currently restructuring the company. I anticipate that this will change in the coming months.

    Advice to Management

There is a tremendous opportunity for the company to capitalize on its rich history, and truly set itself apart from the company's competitors. Through the expansion of social media outlets, and creative advertisement and collateral materials I believe that Schumacher can gain a competitive edge.

I worked at F. Schumacher full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great work environment, better than average pay, nice people. They sell a high-quality, luxury product that stands above all of their competitors.

    Cons

Poor management, change direction of business frequently, lack of leadership. Privately owned family company that lacks leadership and direction. Very high turnover rate, constantly firing and replacing people, while ignoring the real problem--management.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on developing your people and treating them fairly rather than reward incompetence based on who you're friends with at the company. If you're a friend of the CEO or owners, you'll have a job for life. Everyone else is fair game.

    Pros

Exposure to the textile industry, sales and service training.

    Cons

The textile industry is consolidating so their business has been shrinking leading to layoffs and cuts in employee benefits. It is a tough atmosphere due to the business climate but they still have a lot of quality people. They are having the same hardships as their peers in this economic downturn.

    Advice to Management

Get out more and find out what is new in the industry. Be an innovator. Update your product look and style. Their designs are more traditional than what a lot of today's consumers are looking for. They also need to source product better.

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Warm and caring environment. Beautiful products, surrounded by design all the time. Small company makes it easy to know most of the players.

    Cons

Things often happen a lot more slowly than they should. There is not nearly enough communication vertically or horizontally throughout the organization.

    Advice to Management

More large meetings. It's easy to do in a small company. The biggest risk is taking no risks at all.

    Pros

Only thing fair was PTO & summer hours was a nice perk

    Cons

Not even a 1 star. Too many to name, they lure you in with an attractive salary and leave you alone for a few months. There is no direction from upper management and you have to try to read the CFO/COO's mind as to what she wants. the systems are archaic and constantly unreliable to get proper data and to do any real analysis. There is no training. the workload is feast or famine and upper management is clueless on how to run the finance side of the business. The inventory reserves alone is > the 25% of the gross value. the sole plant is run like a 50's sweat shop who have the mentality of pure hourly. Not a minute over or under the workday. God forbid you take an extra 5 minutes at lunch, then HR is called even if you are not an hourly employee. There are so many materials that are aged, obsolete and slow moving. Nothing is done to move the old inventory out. Morale is low. the COO/CFO promised the staff fit bits for approximately one year, nothing was received. If you are promised a bonus, you will not get one. The medical benefit premium almost doubled in one year. You can almost do better privately. The Controller likes to scream and holler and treat you in a condescending fashion. Morale is in the gutter. Once a highly rated company, they have become a sinking ship taking on more and more water. They hire these high salaried people to change their world and nothing comes of it due to lack of any strategy or spending on the right tools. Management doesn't engage with the staff. they give you 2 performance reviews which are ridiculous as it is just a beat up session to keep the under utilized HR staff busy. Their are no raises and haven't been in years. This is a wake up call for anyone considering this place as it is hard to research them as they are a private company. Beware before you give up your current job/career.

    Advice to Management

Look in the mirror, stop hiring friends of the mgmt. team and look to get real results. Update the IT system and treat employees with dignity and respect rather then with power and fear.

They are going thru many many changes that is impacting the company and employees. There doesn't seem to be any direction for the future.

    Pros

Well known product with outstanding reputation as a luxury brand. As a rep it was was always simple to get sales appointments booked with clients. Little micro-management took place from management as long as sales objectives are met. The benefits offered were very good, great paid time off, amazing health insurance.

    Cons

For being a major player in the textile industry, one would think that the company would have run smoother. As a corporate rep the income was not up to industry averages, and the chance to grow you income was limited by the lack of support and structure within the company.

    Advice to Management

Upper management applied a cookie cutter approach to each territory regardless of the unique challenges in a large territory with minimum account appointments per day/week that simply would never be possible no matter how efficient you were with your planning and time management. I only list this as a con because it put me in a situation of compromising my integrity due to an impossible "system".

    Pros

Beautiful, top quality product, reputation and aesthetic.

    Cons

    Many fabrics not in stock

    Advice to Management

Upper management needs to implement a better open door policy. Product needs to be more readily available. Reasons given to employees upon letting them go were not truthful.
