    Pros

You are working with the best of the best. The most intelligent, driven and accomplished Special Agents and Analysts the world over. These are people who have dedicated their lives in service of the nation, it's people and the constitution. Remember that the FBI doesn't take just anybody.

    Cons

Long work hours in highly stressful and often dangerous situations. Not for the weak or fainthearted.

I have been working at FBI full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people are very good. There are pockets of excellence and there are a few bad apples that make it through. However, the hiring process is successful with hiring talent and the organization does what it can to ensure that talent is focused on the mission. The training is vast and offers

    Cons

The benefits are comparable to most private organizations. The health insurance selection is good and choices can overwhelm you if you don’t do your research. This is just the federal government. 98 percent of the “cool” work goes to agents or those who choose to work at Headquarters. Keep that in mind when electing your position of enrollment.

    Advice to Management

Continue to expand the role of support staff. Almost all incoming staff are college educated with a good portion holding higher degrees. In my case, we are professionals with proven skills and experience that, often times, trumps incoming agents.

I have been working at FBI full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Important mission that is critical to the nation, a number of smart people who want to do the "right thing" legally and ethically, diverse career opportunities for agents (and increasingly intelligence analysts), work with an increasingly international dimension, employees are trustworthy and the 'rank and file' tend to support each other during difficult times (professionally/personally).

    Cons

Lack of accountability for personnel results when spending taxpayer money on programs (process versus results); bureaucratic rigidity, culture is geared toward reactive thinking as opposed to strategic thinking, organizational culture where too many employees (particularly special agents at the mid-level) are more motivated to find their next job as opposed to making a substantive contribution where they work, little recognition and career mobility for professional staff who are neither Agents nor intelligence analysts, a lot of middle management in critical positions who lack leadership qualities

    Advice to Management

    1. You claim that all FBI employees are important as the FBI relies on a 'team culture' to accomplish its mission, but in practice you only create career ladders and developmental opportunities for the Agent population and increasingly Intelligence Analysts. Start treating employees like individuals with talent and potential through flexible career options and recognition, not as employees who are defined by their title (i.e. Special Agents, Intelligence Analysts etc..). Some employees don't feel like they're members of a team when certain career series are conspicuously supported and promoted over others.

    2. Stop the 18 month rotation program for Special Agents at HQ, creates too much turnover, costs too much taxpayer money, especially when the organization needs Agents in the field working cases and getting bad guys prosecuted. Special agent rotations to headquarters (HQ) should be because should be orientated toward making difference in the HQ environment through strategic-level contributions, not primarily motivated by TDY benefits and/or promotion incentives. This type of HR system creates an entitlement mentality and a level of self interest that is detrimental toward accomplishing the mission.

    Pros

Premier law enforcement and national security agency worldwide.

    Cons

The FBI can verge on the bureaucratic but is working to change that.

    Advice to Management

    Be more transparent.
