    I worked at FBI full-time

    Pros

Best place in the government to work. The mission was incredible and very rewarding. Great people and amazing training opportunities.

    Cons

None I can think of. Compared to my current agency, the FBI by far is a better place to work and develop your career. If I could go back, I would return in a heartbeat.

I worked at FBI full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

This job allows you to make a difference in the lives of Americans. The work is interesting and the Special Agents are terrific.

    Cons

The worst part of this job is the quality of supervisory agents. For more than twenty years the FBI has basically allowed agents to self select to become supervisors.

    Advice to Management

Managers should really ask themselves why they are managers. The difference in pay is minimal, the job is no fun, and you have to move every few years.

I worked at FBI full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The insurance and other benefits were amazing. I met some of the most amazing people in my life, especially while I worked at HQ. There were opportunities to travel through TDY.

    Cons

Specifically, the JTTF in Charlotte had a hostile work environment. The Directorate of Intelligence had no business managing The SOS position, which was purely tactical. So, having an IA for a boss didn’t make sense. And the FBI has a problem of promoting women just to promote women, but they don’t even promote good leaders. They promote women who mimic men and are hostile and political. There are so many wonderful women at the FBI who could do the job.

    Advice to Management

Don’t pressure women who are taking all 12 weeks of FMLA for maternity leave not to do so. The openly hostile work environment that I experienced and saw in the Charlotte office was appalling. Supervisors lied to get people they didn’t like fired, who were later cleared, but since lying gets you fired, the supervisor should have been punished. It wasn’t a misunderstanding.
There is literally no compassion for anyone who isn’t an agent.
Anyone who thinks outside of the box and questions why things aren’t done more efficiently, etc. is bullied and ostracized. Men are allowed to talk with vulgarity about everything from their wives/girlfriends to newscasters and women are supposed to sit there in silence and do their jobs.
    It’s appalling.

I have been working at FBI full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good and interesting cases, putting bad guys in jail, pay and benefits.

    Cons

For years, the FBI has been hiring "the smartest guy in the room" without regard for interpersonal skills, creativity, tenacity or common sense. Book smarts doesn't equate to good (or even competent) investigator. Never has. Used to be the weakest Agent on a squad could still put a case together. Not so much any more. The DIOG (you have to get in to understand).

    Advice to Management

Get away from the de facto requirement for an advanced degree to be competitive in Agent hiring. Scale back on specialized hiring and pull more from the Diversified Program.

I have been working at FBI full-time

    Pros

It is a great work environment, the people you work with become your family. You receive a lot of respect working there

    Cons

There is a possibility that when you go into the field that you might lose one of your friends that are like family, and or your own life

I have been working at FBI full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great mission. Highly talented employees. Opportunities to travel. Ability to work various programs. Federal government pay and benefits. Job security.

    Cons

Very rigid, bureaucratic organization that is reluctant to adapt to the 21st century in areas of technology, workforce policy, etc. Work hindered by abysmal IT systems. Upward mobility for non-agent personnel is limited. Lack of diversity. The work and environment can be stressful.

    Advice to Management

The mission alone will not attract and retain top talent in adequate numbers. Adapt or be left behind.
