I have been working at FDA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great modern and clean building with free parking. Allowed to work from home 2-3 days a week. Nice coworkers. Good government benefits.

    Cons

Many managers show favoritism. Was told that a "3" on my annual performance review was good and that I would have to be there longer if I wanted a "4" at some point. They don't follow the criteria given in rating you. The managers look out for each other and don't appreciate or utilize staff talent. Very few bonuses. Managers change their minds about what they want. Low morale and lots of turnover in CDER. No job growth unless you switch jobs. FDA is also very politically motivated and constantly trying to create its own power.

    Advice to Management

Recognize people's contributions, hard work, and talents. Review people's work based on their work product, not on their years of seniority.

I have been working at FDA full-time

    Pros

    Steady Pay
Can telework (aka work at home)
    Free parking
Can arrive early or later in the day
    Bonuses
    Laptops

    Cons

    - LOW MORALE. People are unhappy. Management turns blind eye and are clueless about fixing problems.
    - HIGH TURNOVER
    - A lot of fat in upper management with GS-15 or higher salaries and they have no clue about operations. As long as numbers look good, they don't care.
    - Management has been seen spying on employees or sending others to do so
    - Management make rules up as they go - don't care about what unions says
    - Management retaliates against people who speak up so people don't speak the truth or feel comfortable reaching out to the union
    - Not a good work-life balance
    - A lot of lazy coworkers who do little work and get away with it. Over-achievers are reprimanded and look at as a threat.
    - Offices do not communicate with each other.
    - Directors have very little clue how to run offices. Rely on senior staff to do everything. In affect, they turn blind-eye to senior employees' behavior
    - Common-sense is not used

    Advice to Management

Cut the fat in management. Create clear a process across offices. Get rid of bad directors who have crony ties and gossip about employees. People always learn of the gossip and feel negative about their job. Reward employees fairly when it comes to PMAP and stop being politically-correct by giving everyone the same score.

I have been working at FDA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The position allows flexibility in terms of work hours (any 80) and a superb work/life balance.

    Cons

The occasion to be recognized for outstanding review work is extremely rare.

    Pros

Interesting work, sometimes - or rarely

    Cons

Stagnation, bloated bureaucracy getting worse, infantilization of employees, clueless people can wind up in positions of power too easily (but you probably will not be able to)

    Advice to Management

Leave and let someone competent do your job
