I worked at FDNY full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Hard to beat the job security of civil service. Plenty of overtime available. Some great people to work with. Great training opportunities. With overtime for time, you can have essentially unlimited vacation time as well as decent money.

    Cons

Tier 6. Especially as an EMS employee. Some miserable people up the chain of command that love sharing their misery with their employees via constant paperwork and command discipline. It's hard to live on an EMS salary without killing yourself with overtime. Bathroom police. It's a real thing. Concern for minutiae above the importance of patient care.

    Advice to Management

A lot of the old-timers in management need to retire and let the new people with relevant experience take over. People that haven't been on the street in 20 years shouldn't be dictating policy and critiquing anything.
