I have been working at FEMA full-time for more than 9 years

    Pros

The mission of FEMA is great, helping people when they need it most. Gives chance for fulfillment.

    Cons

Change is the only constant. The good idea fairy lives here. The leadership don’t care about people - they will give it lip service, but no real culture. If you are a woman — you will never get ahead.

    Advice to Management

    Become true leaders.

I have been working at FEMA full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Great Employee association, the lower on the chain of command the more pure hearted people are. Acts like they want to support the needs of the employees and agency.

    Cons

Senior Management are disengaged from the workers. Deployments outside of Region are strong protested by middle management. Don't treat all employees equal. The only advancement is for the good ole boy people. Senior management don't support promotions from within, "because it creates more work on the HR section". Everyone is different with different needs.. don't put everyone into the same category.

    Advice to Management

FEMA should be an agency with the moto " One Team one Fight". We are all FEMA, and you have employees that want to help, and not just within Region 6. Allow your staff to grow intellectually and enforce promotions from within. Talk to your employees... not just your management staff. LISTEN to what people say! Don't just support your management because of their position, DO WHAT IS RIGHT for the agency and the employees.

Micromanaging is at an all time high!

Stop micromanaging everyone. Let the new model work itself.

I worked at FEMA full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Learned some good and mostly what not to do by observing others mistakes. Worked with excellent management under multiple programs. Mission is driven and motivating. When disaster hits the workforce is dedicated.

    Cons

Recent leadership is deliberately organized and not really making a difference. They are just riding on previous leadership efforts. I grew professionally and am grateful but the agency needs new diverse leadership that can take operational challenges to heart and make a difference.

I have been working at FEMA full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Tough job but work life balance is great. Having a fully knowledgeable experienced staff is highly valued for recovery work.

    Cons

Some people are typical and collecting a paycheck faking it till they make it while others work their butts off receiving no recognition.

    Advice to Management

Just because it’s government run does not mean military experience can bring expertise to the actual job itself. Equal pay across all genders and ages based on actual experience is what should be given not based off who you know but what you know. Public assistance is a very complicated program and senior management is few so having a talented educated staff will provide more efficiency.
