Proud to support the mission of FHI, frustrated with the way that mission is lead.

Lots to be proud of given what the organization does/has done. Excellent and comprehensive benefits package including 12% pension (FYI: takes 5 years to fully vest; 20% per year), 18 vacation days (to start; 12 sick leave provided as well, both roll over if unused), Fairly casual work environment.
Cons
Promotions are few and far between; it seems like the best way to get one is to leave the organization and come back. Getting new ideas implemented is difficult and is often met with multiple levels of resistance. A large number of people have been with the organization for quite some time, meaning that there are a lot of "legacy" politics you must weed through. Merit increases mimic those of a governmental organization, meaning that fixed increases for everyone are the norm and rewards for effort that is "above and beyond" your peers is very very rare. Professional and/or career development seem like an afterthought. I have not witnessed any significant attempt to get feedback from employees about their impression of the organization, even as turnover has increased during my tenure.

Despite its admirable mission, FHI is a bureaucratic organization lacking effective day-to-day managers

Important mission Ability to travel internationally Generally good salaries and benefits

Competition between departments High-stress work environment (sometimes needlessly) and long hours Often, very poor management skills among mid-level managers. Higher-level managers too busy to notice.

SORT BY THE MOST HELPFUL! IT’S A TERRIBLY PLACE TO WORK! CAUSTIC, NARCISSISTIC, CONCEITED, TRIFLING, INEPT...
Oct 9, 2015 - Anonymous Employee in Durham, NCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
If you are a yes-(wo)man in the right social clique, and are willing to tirelessly do the work of your superiors for a fraction of the pay, FHI 360 can be a friendly place to work for a time. In the rare instances where the subordinates assume the reins, like when a director leaves suddenly, the company prospers.
Cons
FHI 360, is one of the most top-heavy, unorganized and directionless NGOs you can conceive of. Upper management is filled with underqualified and arrogant EX-PATs. It is one of the most caustic environments to work if you happen to voice any measure of collective sagacity. Intelligence, wisdom, tactical thought, and expertise is enthusiastically punished by upper management. Upper management starting from the Associate Directors, all the way to the C-Suite, is unfailingly filled with narcissistic, self-absorbed, conceited, trifling, inept, moronic, and oblivious individuals. Unsurprisingly, these individuals are terrified of their employees who are without a doubt better qualified and in reality handling the bulk of their work. However, those shouldering the bulk of the work rarely administer strategic direction. No opportunities for advancement. Hostile work environment for those not in the 'drinking-buddies' club. Fraudulent usage of USAID funds to cover bloated overhead.
