Nonprofit with a big business feel

Laid-back office culture. Best work life balance I've experienced in the global health non-profit industry, as well as the smoothest business and communications/HR practices
Cons
Can be difficult to feel that your work is assisting end-users; Connection between exploratory research and benefit for the poor is less tight than at more service delivery-oriented organizations

Depends on your supervisor

Interesting projects Work life balance if you have a good relationship with your supervisor
Cons
Men are treated better than women even though it is a majority female workplace. Many entry level staff are worked beyond 40 hours with no compensation Very little room for advancement

Great mission, awful work life
Feb 2, 2022 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Amazing mission and good resume builder
Cons
Absolutely no work life balance for entry level employees. Everything is expected to be completed yesterday whether you were trained on it or not. Each team and department is completely isolated from each other and is oblivious to how anything is done outside of their position. Auditing paranoia breeds hostility and blaming across the board. The culture is extremely corporate and cold for a nonprofit. Some of the greatest minds but just terrible structure.

Pros
The people I work with are really wonderful, respectful and professional. The company cares a lot about work/life balance and promotes flexible work schedules which is great with everyone working from home these days.
Cons
Bureaucratic due to its large size which can get frustrating trying to get your daily work completed

Global Health Research Intern

I thoroughly enjoyed everyone I worked with at FHI. The culture is such that everyone is friendly and flexible. Many people often work from home. My particular supervisor has been with FHI for more than a decade and still absolutely loves it. Work/life balance is great. Job satisfaction seems high. Views from the office in Durham are amazing (not that important but still cool).
Cons
As should be expected in the world of research, running into funding roadblocks is not uncommon and may stifle work activities for a time period, but it was my experience that alternative assignments come up and fill the time.
