  • Upper management totes this notion of the 3C's; which is theory sounds like a great approach, but this is not carried through (in 5 reviews)

I have been working at FLIR full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great atmosphere, everybody really wants to help each other. One of the few companies that I have been at where everyone has the same goal.

    Cons

Segmented business units, with separate hierarchy tends to be prohibitive for scaling the business.

    Advice to Management

Continue to push, when someone stumbles let them know, and discuss what went wrong and why.

I worked at FLIR full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent advanced IR technology product line and training. Involvement with all levels of professional personnel and opportunity to use products.

    Cons

Department I was working in was dissolved. Products not being sold with pertinent attention to needs of specific industrial segments.

    Advice to Management

More frequent training sessions at lower cost to promote the use of your products by certified operators and seed demand for further sales. Use by noncertified users can undermine the reputation of iR thermography by resulting in inaccurate evaluations or worse.

I have been working at FLIR (More than a year)

    Pros

FLIR is a great company to work at. The teams are small and the work is engaging. The location is great. There's a lot going on.

    Cons

The company is still growing. I'd like to see how the company defines its workflow as it moves into a consumer market with FLIR ONE

I worked at FLIR full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Overall FLIR is a large company, but they are spread about in various areas of the country and each division that I ever visited was never much larger than 100 people. So any given location has more of a small company feel. The Stillwater, OK location is focused on developing handheld explosives detection equipment which is sold around the world to organizations as small as local police departments to those as large as the U.S. military. Working at FLIR will expose you to a wide variety of technology and talented people.

    Cons

I wouldn't call it a "con" as much as it is a deliberate decision that has both benefits and consequences, but FLIR is very product focused and they regularly trim back to reduce expenditures in any area that is not directly delivering revenue. The downside of this is that very talented people are sometimes released as available contracts and corporate goals are reevaluated and the direction is adjusted. But that is likely true in most companies that want to survive today. As long as you're skill set and job function remain aligned with the overall corporate direction, you won't have any problems.

Quality control is highly emphasized and practiced, but some additional spending on process improvement could probably yield even greater production efficiency. But I expect the budget decisions are evaluated based on the expected CBR.

    Advice to Management

Keep delivering high value / high quality products. Consider dedicating some additional budget to internal projects with the goal of increasing the productivity in key areas and streamlining data collection and analysis so that the metrics needed to track improvements are available.

I have been working at FLIR as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Very flexible and reasonable when it comes to hours. Opportunities to work from home. Actively made efforts to provide challenging assignments and tasks.

    Cons

The internship was initially unorganized. Wasn't doing originally intended task, thought the intern program as a whole seems to have since improved.

    Advice to Management

Continue improving internship program, a lot of opportunity for new hires and good work if you challenge your interns effectively.

    Pros

Excellent benefits, good pay, enjooyable coworkers, good ethics& morals, exciting product

Too much corporate bureaucracy. Upper management has a stranglehold on operations, often leaving lower managers unable to do their job effectively.

    Advice to Management

Ease your choke hold and let lower managers do their job

I have been working at FLIR full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Technology is interesting and fun to talk about. Employees are very engaged. Great benefits and pay is fair. Management team is very talented and focused on keeping the company strong and competitive. They generally make unemotional decisions that are fact based. Very strong ethics.

    Cons

Communication is getting better, but still has a ways to go to fully engage the employees. Not enough emphasis on employee training. Building could use facelift. The cafe is okay, but not great. Workout facility is weak. Would like to have more fun at work.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on creating a positive culture and engage directly with employees. We will always focus on being financially strong, but would be good to set aside some additional budget for training, fun and socializing. Shareholders aren't more important that employees. Consider adding more resources to stretched teams. Management team is a bit insular and doesn't represent a full set of perspectives and functions. Seems strange that human resources doesn't report to Andy.
