The Best Company I Have Worked For Throughout My Career, So Far

    Apr 8, 2022 - Consultant Engineer
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Note: Recent graduates and prospective employees should be aware that, just like every company and human being, FM Global has been coping with the impacts of the Coronavirus as best as they can. Every company I have reviewed has had a dip in ratings in the last two years. The stress is pervasive. This company is a fantastic place to start your career and retire with too, as the retirement benefits are head and shoulders above consulting firm standards. Just some of the pros: -Likeminded, good faith colleagues. -Unrivaled training and a wealth of information spanning more than a century to absorb, if you commit yourself to it. (Hint commit yourself to it and you won’t regret it). -Insurance industry is stable and recession resilient. FM Global is doubly as resilient. -You will travel, and be wined and dined like no engineer in your graduating class. -A good faith approach to business that asks for a high level of commitment in delivering a high standard of work (If you are the kind of person that doesn't floss every night you probably won't want to work here) -A great starting salary that doesn’t keep up with the competition over time but pre-COVID was more than compensated for with lower workloads and substantially more engineering training and support.

    Cons

You've seen all the cons in the other reviews. Sadly they are all currently true, to varying degrees. But this is just a snapshot in time. The company will recover, it's been through worse, and there is no other company to my knowledge that will invest in you and develop you as thoroughly and extensively as this company will, at their own expense. If you value a good faith investment without strings, this company is for you. Four years ago my rating would have been 4.5/5. Four years from now I would bet money it will again be 4.5/5.

    Cons

There have been atleast 3 major pivots in the past few years - the recent one being growth via contractors without making the contractors accountable for their output. The entire technology department is a mess. Power is concentrated amongst few people. If they like you, then you will be a success here , else its back to the shadows for you. And for them to like you, you have to drink the kool-aid and be agreeable. Growth within the company is based on relationships and the teams you work in - people are not measured on equal terms and there is rampant favoritism. Every new employee is like a new toy and becomes the flavor of the month until they are replaced by a newer employee. There is no hope for alternative viewpoints. Classic case of group-think but most of them do not even realize that. This company should be a hard pass for now but hopefully they change.

    Avoid at all cost

    Nov 15, 2022 - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

There are no tangible pros. The offering is mediocre.

    Cons

If you’re considering FM Global – don’t! The place runs like a cult - seeking inappropriate loyalty to its leaders, opposing critical thinking, isolating its employees, penalizing them for leaving (even references are outlawed), emphasizing special doctrines, and crossing behavioral boundaries. You get conditioned to think that the outside world is dark & scary, and FM Global is The Oasis of wealth & stability. In reality, the pay is below average. The bonus structure is nothing to write home about. The benefits are so-so. You are treated like an easily replaceable, expandable asset. The culture is toxic. Rampant nepotism. All interns are children of clients and brokers (no conflict of interest there, eh?!) All promotions are penciled-in years ahead. You – don’t matter. Your contributions will just be propelling somebody else forward. The place is overpopulated by British and French expats that have no understanding or respect for American culture. If you die on a job working 100 hours a week to support them while they take a month-long vacation - c'est la vie! The US employees (without the protection of the European work council) are treated like guinea pigs for experimentation on how much abuse they can sustain, having a carrot (e.g., pension) hanging in front of them. The culture is terrible. It is the execs’ favorite pastime to embarrass, degrade and humiliate their subordinates. HR is useless. Don’t subject yourself to this – stay away from this company. There are better places out there!

    Pros

The work is incredibly interesting and engaging. The local culture is tight knit and individual contributors can develop close friendships.

    Cons

FM Global has move from hiring competent engineers to hiring diversity, inclusion and equity engineers. Management does not listen to individual contributors and rules from corporate with a heavy hand. I would not recommend the current company to a friend, but four years ago I would…

Once a standout company, now just like the rest

Nov 21, 2022 - Marketing Specialist in Johnston, RI

    Business Outlook

    Pros

A very successful company that invests in its employees and provides opportunities for global travel. Pension is the differentiator above an average benefits package.

    Cons

In the past decade, constant management changes have resulted in incessant chaos. What was once a company of dedicated, long-tenured employees is now seeing unprecedented turnover--both voluntary and involuntary. Marketing "leadership" took a turn for the worse following the retirement of the former CMO. New leader was brought in from outside, and has earned a reputation for running a corporate sweatshop. Division was completely reorganized two years ago, resulting in chaos and myopic strategy. Morale is at an all-time low, and the majority of my former colleagues are planning their exits if they aren't being shown the door. Sadly, company loyalty is a thing of the past. Look elsewhere. FM Global's best days are behind it from an employee perspective.

The work is interesting, but leaders take advantage of good employees and put themselves first

    Oct 30, 2022 - Anonymous Employee

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Benefits are slightly above average. The work can be interesting. FM Global's business model is unique. Interesting clients with unique challenges in commercial property insurance. Like every job, you'll find some nice and smart colleagues.

    Cons

Culture of fear and distrust. Leaders have not cultivated listening skills that would allow them to be open to understanding the experience of working at FM Global that goes beyond their narrow frame of reference for what FM Global is or should be. They lack imagination or curiosity about people (employees) other than themselves, or people in power who they 'need' to get something they want. They dismiss employees who disagree with them and undermine FM Global's foundation of mutuality in doing so. Leadership relies heavily on positional power/title as their source for garnering respect rather than their actions. They make ego-driven, emotionally-charged decisions that impact their employees negatively with little to no consequences for their actions. This will continue on because no one in power is strong enough to admit when they've failed. Employees are continuously surveyed but nothing changes, allowing leadership to say they care by getting feedback, but unfortunately for them "yes" without the "how" means nothing, and employees are noticing. Mid-level management is unwilling to deliver bad news to senior leadership for fear it will cost them their job. This isn't unique to FM Global, but managers promote people they perceive to be like themselves so the culture perpetuates. The parts of the company I've been exposed to are sexist. Women who survive in this environment often criticize other female employees if it benefits their career. FM has tried women's networking events, women's this or that... tokenizing the female experience at FM Global instead of actively integrating women into the company by giving them leadership positions or paying them the same as their male colleagues. Men act like going to work is the same as hanging out with the boys, and often lack professionalism. This is pretty typical for corporate in an engineering company, but FM Global isn't doing anything unique or creative to try to fix this problem. They are not an industry leader in this regard. FM Global operates cheaply for how much money they have. Senior leadership lacks confidence in themselves on topics that are outside engineering, so they bring in management consulting firms to help them make decisions/manage IT-related projects. Like any company with management consulting, FM Global pays the management consultants far more than they pay their employees. Employee morale is crushed when management consultants take their ideas and take credit for them. Upper management thinks that the management consultant is doing great work, when really, they set up meetings, build slide decks, and co-opt other people's good ideas as their own. But the biggest problem is that they are not incentivized to solve real problems, they are incentivized to have more billable hours. Employees are expected to work a ton of overtime to get the work done with nothing additional to show for it. Compensation at FM Global is low for the above and beyond contributions of employees.
