I worked at FNC full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

It is a great place to work with opportunities to grow your career and solve interesting problems. I’m grateful for the experience of working with several talented individuals. FNC provides numerous learning opportunities for new and seasoned developers. I’ve learned so much from the people at FNC. During my time at FNC I transitioned from a junior developer to a leader within the company. The development culture has been steadily improving, and the Director of Software Development is easy to talk to and open to suggestions for improvement. In fact, most people in the company are laid back and easy to talk to. FNC offers a good work/life balance and has fun activities for employees and families. The company is also involved with the community and local charities.

    Cons

The company had layoffs last year followed by salary cuts (salaries have been restored). These layoffs were handled horribly and were partly caused by poor managerial decisions. The executives, while good and intelligent people, do not have a technical background. Because of this developers are not valued as highly as they should be. There are too many business analysts and while some are very talented others cause more problems than they solve. Development is understaffed because it is hard to find talented developers in the small town of Oxford MS. While FNC is using several new technologies and has several challenging problems to solve, developers can get stuck maintaining old software. Management has made significant strides in solving these problems, but they still have some work left to do.

    Advice to Management

There is still bad blood from the recent layoffs and pay cuts. You need to make an effort to mend those wounds. Realize that you cannot be a software company without software developers. Don't wait until people leave to offer them a competitive salary. The "Duck Book" is not fantastic.

I have been working at FNC

    Pros

a group of very smart people doing some amazing things

    Cons

the challenges are trying to build a company in a very small town. There are a lot of cultural challenges if you're not from that part of the world

    Advice to Management

do your best to help out of town workers feel at home
