I have been working at FORMS + SURFACES full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I just started working here, but I don't pray to leave working here for no reason. Besides, Working here is so interesting and wholesome. Perhaps, what a neat place and is the best and less free production company you could dream of working at .

    Cons

If you are the lazy type and a chain smoker. Don't come here because you are going home immediately

    Advice to Management

People always say the company love to lay off a lot, hope you are going to proof them wrong.

Thanks for the kind words. If you are a 5 star employee and demonstrate those characteristics you will have a bright long-term future here at F+S.

    Pros

This company has a pretty good starting wage they talk a good game and it's quite believable on what they say

    Cons

They work you pretty good through the spring and the summer and as soon as it gets slow they will find a reason to let you go. plus there are some rude and quite ignorant people that work with them

Sorry that your experience was not a positive one. I am glad to hear however that we pay above the average scale as we try and attract the best candidates. Ours is not a seasonal business and I can ... More

I have been working at FORMS + SURFACES full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Hourly workers can have many opportunities for overtime. Some internal advancement is possible. A lot of people who are easy to get along with.

    Cons

Hourly workers can only make good money through steady overtime. Some OT is mandatory which can wear on you. Employee development can be limited by the position or department you are in. Layoffs happen regularly due to business fluctuations.

    Advice to Management

Post job openings internally. Find out more about employees skills and career desires. Don't take for granted people who are willing and seemingly expected to continue doing some of the dirtier but no less important jobs.

Thanks for the great comments. All jobs are posted online and also spread internally via referral. We can however do a better job posting internally and will look to formalize a program in this area ... More

Great coworkers, Good hours of Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm.

    Cons

Parking can be difficult, plant is not air conditioned.

Thanks for the comments. Yes parking is tight for sure but still beats paying $200 per month!

    Pros

Smart Designs, smart management, supportive creative environment for project driven design & manufacturing professionals. If you enjoy selling superior design solutions to the architect / spec community, with the oversight of PM field delivery, this is a fantastic proposal.

    Cons

The only con was being a little too distant (at times) from the pulse of Sr. Management (CA), while working the east coast opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Perhaps a better equity split between spec sales and field installs would foster a more "Team" driven environment. It is design solutions, not selling widgets.

    Pros

Overtime is often available for you to work and you get time and a half for every hour over forty hours.

    Cons

Working overtime is about the only way you can make money. PTO or paid time off is earned slowly and you have to work out of a temp agency for 3 to 5 months until they hire you then you slowly accumulate 2 hours every 2 weeks for the first 7 years.

    Cons

Non-creative absentee ownership. On site management just average. Very uninspiring place to work.

I have been working at FORMS + SURFACES full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Privately owned business allows for quick decisions and no bureaucracy. The company is really investing in programs to continue the consistent annual growth. Those who work hard are rewarded. Size of company allows people to be exposed to many aspects of running a business.

    Cons

Fair work/life balance, but if you are a "clock puncher", this is not for you.

    Advice to Management

Keep the family owned business culture. It is a big differentiator.

    Pros

None, maybe if your in management, they take the credit of the good hard workers below them and take all the pats on the back. You will show up one day and find out you have to work 12hr/days for the next 2 weeks with no notice and looked down upon if you cannot meet there 1 day notice.

    Cons

I worked in Pittsburgh HQ for over 3yrs and I worked under the most egotistical and miserable management. Hard workers that have worked there much longer than anyone else and helped owners start the company (10-20yrs) would say "remember when people used to like coming to work", the upper management would use the new employees/temps to pump out production then dump them after working 50-60hr+/weeks just to get a quick big order out. The apple management would rule the roost with fear to bully people and keep them doing whatever they wanted. The apple management would show up without knowing anything going on and nit pick on the good hard working employees for punching in a minute late or coming back from our only 10 minute break a day and wait for people walking in a minute late. Would that make you want to work hard for that guy.

    Advice to Management

Take a look at all management b/c you are risking liability everyday you let them do whatever they want. Good long term employees are fed up with management and you will be left with a lot of new employees and a employees union.

I worked at FORMS + SURFACES full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are a few unique individuals here that are some of the best people I've known and worked with.
This company used to be run by great people and had great values.

    Cons

Gross mis-management with no accountability for anyone below a management position.
American engineers are slowly being kicked out in favor of a team in India, those remaining are expected to finish the same workload. There are no opportunities for advancement or improvement. Benefits here are just above the bottom of the barrel, however it seems management receives much better hidden benefits and certainly more paid time off than the grunts. Management here is entrenched and disinterested in existing employees. Some groups have such high turnover that you can't remember the new team members names.

The management here has a long history of promising you one thing and breaking it months later. Any offers from them are no better than flat out lies.

    Advice to Management

Why bother with advice, any interest or compassion from the top is completely fake.
It seems the entire goal is to maximize profits while crushing any remaining hope in the existing employee base. Possibly a long term goal of shuttering the entire company.
