I have been working at FPA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Truly care about a positive work environment, great work/life balance (can work remotely and flexible schedule), great people, team atmosphere.

    Cons

Lack of opportunities for advancement and, while the organization is focused on professional growth of it's members, this has not translated well to its employees. It's an association, so pay could be better.

Need better technology and data to be more effective.

    Advice to Management

You're heading in the right direction, but pay will need to improve to match the high cost of living in the Denver area or you will lose great talent.

I worked at FPA (Less than a year)

    Pros

Absolutely none, except that it was a short commute for me

    Cons

Horrible leadership, pay was not commensurate with experience, stupid "rules" such as "kitchen duty" are actually considered as part of your job description, but probably the worst are the employee pep rallies where the leader tells you how lucky you are to work in this cesspool. Note: They are afraid of talent, individuality, intelligence and anything resembling intellectual ideas or true education.

    Advice to Management

Grow up and stop treating employees like children.

Please upgrade the technology to support better data.

I have been working at FPA (More than a year)

    Pros

Great leadership--CEO Lauren Schladle is innovative, welcoming, warm and she's accessible. She makes all employees feel like we are part of a family.

It's an extremely receptive environment. Flexible scheduling with a great work/life balance. The managers are exceptional team leaders. Great benefits--including a 401(k) matching program; access to financial planners; and travel.

    Cons

    Honestly cannot think of any.

I worked at FPA full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Decent pay--no long hours. Friendly folk.

    Cons

Confusion, cliques and volunteers who use the organization for their own benefit. Conflicts of interest abound. Changes of direction happen constantly and the best staff keep leaving to avoid getting laid off in the next round of layoffs.

    Advice to Management

Get an ethics officer and clean up the conflicts of interest.

I worked at FPA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great work/life balance, great benefits, a good place to try your hand at new tasks that may not be in your scope of experience, good camaraderie. Pay is at the lower end of the scale, though if you factor in the 37.5 hour work weeks it's pretty comparable hourly.

    Cons

Poor management, very top heavy (a lot of "managers", not a lot of worker bees when I left), constant changing of directions for the company - even monthly, very heavy emphasis on office politics. High turnover rate as people are either laid off or can't handle the circus that is FPA.

    Advice to Management

Pick a direction and stick to it, instead of choosing a new "pet project of the year/month/week/day" and devoting all your resources to it, only to decide to completely flip and drop that project. Reward employees based on performance and results.

    I worked at FPA full-time

    Pros

    - Good work/life balance. I worked very few evenings/weekends etc.
    - Generous vacation days

    Cons

Low salary. Little to no opportunity for advancement. Terrible leadership. FPA has been in a state of near constant "re-organization" during the past several years. In addition to the many rounds of layoffs there is also very high staff turnover.

    Advice to Management

Define your staff structure and stick to it. Then define the association's positions and strategies and stick to it.

I worked at FPA full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The starting salary was acceptable and most everyone left by 5pm,

    Cons

Lack of organization; cheesy mandatory "teambuilding" retreats and conferences; zero understanding of the Web; Unqualified colleagues; and a ridiculous review process that includes whether or not you performed your "kitchen duty" well. There are little cliques of people who have been there for years or even decades and if you don't play nice with them, you won't do well.

    Advice to Management

Watch "Office Space" and learn why your "leadership" isn't working. Also, allow people to actually perform their jobs! Also, spend less time reviewing people formally and more time talking with your teams and seeing what's needed. (The monthly breakfast meetings are a total waste of time!)

    - Teamwork
    - Support when needed
    - Excellent benefits
    - Good work environment
    - Nice office and good locations
    - Departmental organization helps flow of projects and communication

    Cons

    - Opportunity for advancement isn't the greatest
    - Lack of incoming employee training
    - Environment is a little too strict
    - Technical and computer resources are lacking quality, should be upgraded. Made completing projects frustrating

    Advice to Management

Improve social elements of environment, incoming employee training and technology resources

    Pros

    - Flexible work schedule
    - Good 401(k) match
    - Excellent coworkers

    Cons

    - Comparatively low pay
    - Lack of leadership
    - Management micromanages unimportant projects and neglects to think ahead
    - Little to no professional development opportunity

    Advice to Management

Trust your people. Take a stand on issues. Directly confront employees who aren't performing instead of simply shuffling job responsibilities around.
