    I worked at FSI International full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    This company had interesting work, nice people, professional environment, and a pleasant atmosphere. It was very family friendly and for the most part, people worked 40 hour weeks.

    Cons

    The company never seemed to do as well as they projected. The semi-conductor field is very cyclic and FSI seemed to not do as well in the good times and do worse in the bad times than the industry as a whole. There were lots of rounds of layoffs. Upper management was not local, which led to some hard feelings.

    Pros

    Majority of production staff are easy to get along with and will help out as needed. Decent schedule. Great 2nd shift production manager

    Cons

    The most important thing for this company is the almighty dollar. Upper management is more interested in profits than of spending the appropriate amount of money to develop excellent tools. They want you to volunteer to help with field work, but you have to pay for all travel expenses and then submit a bill for reimbursement. Who's got that kind of credit line sitting around when you are working and having to pay bills for a family. No thanks!

    Advice to Management

    If you continue to build upon a constantly shifting base, your business will not survive. Pay the money to develop the tools, so they will work the first time when they hit the field.

    Pros

    Good exposure to a variety of engineering technologies. Some top-notch engineering talent in terms of both technical ability and customer orientation. Some sales people are actually technically knowledgeable about products. Relatively flat organization; company is small enough so that you can have substantial impact in a given area.

    Cons

    Internal loyality pursued to the point of cronyism. Lack of willingness to question whether people are being employed in appropriate areas of competence. Lack of respect shown between employees in high-pressure circumstances. Bureaucracy is out of proportion with the size of the company.

    Advice to Management

    Realize that process improvement and product development initiatives cannot be executed simultaneously with no impact on already strained resources. Don't ask for employee opinions unless you are willing to seriously consider the answers and act on them. Reform the product management function so that it maximizes the probability of building the right tool at the right time.
