I have been working at FTI Consulting (More than a year)

    Pros

FTI is a great place to grow your career. Lots of great people with knowledge and expertise that they are willing to share.

    Cons

Culture is seriously lacking. Work can come in ebbs and flows and in the flows you work so much that you get burnt out but in the ebbs you will be very bored. You are also evaluated on utilization which can be tough when it is not always in your control.

I have been working at FTI Consulting full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Lots of opportunity to work on important, difficult problems. Many great coworkers - smart and hard-working. Lots of freedom to make your own path.

    Cons

Long engagements can wear on teams and morale, and there's little effort to try to break up the monotony. Promotion / career path is more rigid (time-based) than management would like you to believe. Results in lack of motivation in younger staff to push and achieve.

    Advice to Management

Worry less that people will leave if they aren't promoted with all of their peers. Find a better long-term strategy.

    Pros

Good benefits, good salary, decent support from management.

    Cons

Big corporations always have that layer of inert mass that makes it hard to get things done sometimes. Culture is a little stiff.

    Advice to Management

    Get onboard with working remotely,

I worked at FTI Consulting full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Winner take all culture rewards those who overachieve. Management is looking to groom future senior managing directors, not coddle recent graduates.

    Cons

Even if you are great at "doing" you better start building relationships day one. After a couple years, if you are not part of the new business funnel then your career will meander around the permanent director parking lot.

    Advice to Management

Take a longer term view across cycles in terms of retaining (paying) your up and comers. Outside hires don't survive in this culture and too many One rated performers walk when their business unit has a bad year / bad bonus pool.

    Pros

You are exposed to a WORLD of clients in every imaginable sector from law to corporate to finance to healthcare to energy to manufacturing/retail. Point to the WSJ any given day, and our clients aren't just featured...but usually a matter/case/engagement on which we're working with them. And unlike Big 4 or other traditional agencies, FTI allows you a great deal more creativity and input to the engagement than you would in a cookie-cutter agency/firm approach.

    Cons

Typical consulting cons: tough work/life balance, annoying politics, questionable promotions and acquisitions/hires make valuable talent walk out of the door in frustration as a result. Retention is a key issue for FTI right now.

    Advice to Management

Retain, Retain, Retain. You've got the clients, you've got the talent, find a way to make people stay.

I have been working at FTI Consulting full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible work schedule, quarterly bonus based on billable hours in excess of targets, solid technology skill set, larger than average annual salary increase, large variety of projects

    Cons

Little grad school assistance is offered. Lots of redundant work sometimes stretching several days doing the same thing. Boring office environment. Very little work culture.

    Advice to Management

Add more formal training and 1 on 1 teaching/mentoring. There are other activities that should result in bonuses other than just Billable hours.

If you are not a consultant and work in recruiting or another smaller "niche" area, you are not embraced.
