I worked at Factory Design Labs as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Great office, good location, benefits and some some really talented traditional designers. Was working on some great brands that look good on your resume.

    Cons

Digital team was treated as second class citizens. Leadership was too arrogant to see the value in the people they had. Layoffs happened every week.

    Advice to Management

    Get with the times.

I worked at Factory Design Labs full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

They like to party and waste time and money.

    Cons

The staff is completely incompetent. We're talking intern level skills. The executive management is absolutely unequipped to handle even remedial direction of the organization. Internal conflicts arise from lack of leadership, lack of experience and lack of vision. Basic projects consume an entire client budget in creative and accounts without any production participation. Every project I was involved with went over budget and over schedule from lack of documentation, planning and inexperience on the part of the account and creative team. From HR to the CEO this organization is incompetent and to be avoided at all costs. Both as a client, and as an employee. Never in my 20+ years in this industry have I seen an organization that took 6 months to redesign a simplistic website. The basic concepts of modern advertising and interactive projects completely elude the imaginations of this organizations entire team from management to production staff. Stay away!

    Advice to Management

Close your doors and go sip Mai Thai's on the beach if you don't care to take the advice of the experienced consultants you employ. But start by hiring experienced staff that can consult. Also learn what modern advertising is and Is not. Maybe learn what you sell before trying to sell it. And maybe cut down on the pot smoking til you can get a project out the door.

I have been working at Factory Design Labs full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Had a great client roster to help you jump start a career in advertising.
    - Worked with some of the most talented designers and developers

    Cons

    - Long hours and not much appreciation for the hard work you put in
    - Management team for Account Services wasn't very knowledgable and was not able to provide very good training, outside of process oriented skills
    - All big name clients left after initial contracts were up, as they realized the design, albeit great, did not include strategic thinking from a business perspective

    Advice to Management

Need to start taking the blame for failures and not take it out on lower level employees, whom have little say in most matters.

    Pros

This place is fine if you're just starting out but think twice before you join this place.

    Cons

The positive reviews on glassdoor are written by HR. It's hellish hours for average work and the egos at the top strangle any chance at creativity.

I worked at Factory Design Labs full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Nice lower level talent.

    Cons

Worst, fear driven environment I've ever experienced. Design driven, not idea driven. Total lack of leadership. No advertising experience. From the CEO to account to creative. The blind leading the blind. The clueless chairman and board is so snowed and intimidated by the CEO, they let him run that company into the ground.

    Advice to Management

Get a real CEO that wants to work and make a great company out of what is now a sinking ship.

I worked at Factory Design Labs full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great culture. Fun and entertaining. I didn't appreciate that at the time but the company really handled the lost of clients in a great manner. They tried to take care of employees that had lost their jobs and overall were pretty well run. Great at change management. Cutting edge technology at every level. Great learning opportunities. You get to be involved in many aspects of the company and wear multiple hats. Management listens to your ideas.

    Cons

Some people took themselves too seriously. Some desk squatters that sit at their desk all night just cause they think it makes them look good. Quite a bit of favoritism. Better employees have been constantly passed on or even fired for less capable employees. Lost some really really good people because of political reasons.

    Advice to Management

Keep the great culture. Thanks for the great experience.

I worked at Factory Design Labs full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great location and paid parking. Workspace is modern and affable. Excellent music. Account management is strong for a digital ad agency.

    Cons

    - Took the position because I was told a major client was signed - this was not true
    - Losing this client resulted in major layoffs, but the details we poorly handled
    - This pattern of client loss has persisted since
    - Communication from Sr Management is untrustworthy
    - Lost a lot of solid technical talent
    - At this time the agency appears rudderless, not learning from the past

    Advice to Management

    Adapt to the new world.

I worked at Factory Design Labs full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Amazing talent, global clients, freedom of expression, culture of creativity...

    Cons

Risky business. They hire on large amounts of accounts and creatives with intentions of holding on to and/or expanding their client roster, but if one leaves (like one did while I was employed), you're gone. They love the layoffs, so be prepared.

    Advice to Management

Realize the talent you have under the roof and don't loose them to a bad business model.
