I worked at Fair Trade USA as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company is really motivated by the mission of making the world a better place. You can feel that the employees share the passion and interest of having an impact.

    Cons

The business model is under review and there were some issues due to funding. The expansion in new channels opened up multiple opportunities.

I worked at Fair Trade USA as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The whole office is extremely friendly
Getting to work for a great non-profit for great cause
Flexible hours and my department allowed for me to do whatever I was interested in within the department
    Free delicious coffee!

    Cons

Didn't encounter any very challenging experiences, but that was great since it was for the summer anyway, and it wasn't stressful.

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Fair Trade USA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Really smart people; fair and reasonable pay for a non-profit; strong leadership; interesting and meaningful work - no dull jobs; change to travel to amazing places (if you have a role that permits that); nice office environment; office is managed expertly.

    Cons

So many priorities; difficult to stay focused on a few critical priorities when CEO is always talking about the next exciting thing and tries to get everyone to change priorities to suit his desires; it can be difficult to move beyond middle management as there are few senior management positions.

    Advice to Management

Keep focusing on mission and impact. Stay on course and don't get distracted by the next "shiny thing."

    Pros

Great mission, effective and challenging work. Fantastic staff in many positions. Opportunity to get great field and business experience. Relatively good flexibility and work-life balance.

    Cons

CEO and CFO are not the leaders we need for success. They are creating very poor morale through a discouraging and sometimes demeaning work environment. People working with the CFO are close to quitting because of the treatment they receive. We need a CEO who follows through on his word and doesn't burn so many bridges internally and externally. One could overlook personality quirks if the quality of the work and leadership were still good. But it's not. People are afraid to speak up and ask for change.

    Advice to Management

It's time for a change of top management if we want to turn coffee around, create a real strategy to grow our impact and create an environment where people feel respected and supported to be successful.

    Pros

Work is interesting and has an impact. Has really interesting and smart people working here and all care about the mission. Has a very communal feel to the office. Good perks.

    Cons

There could be more communication between departments and between junior and senior staff. When big changes happen, it's not seen coming. Some staff think different avenues are more appropriate for achieving the company's mission.

    Advice to Management

Be more open to hearing opposition. Make transitions and changes smoother for staff, make them feel appreciated.

    Pros

Great people, that are mission driven and really sharp. The work itself is not balanced, some people and teams work much harder than others. Awesome work culture where people are friendly and warm.

    Cons

Pay is fairly low, even for a non-profit. CEO is NOT mission driven, does not treat employees fairly and certainly does not pay fairly. Wish there was better leadership that was cohesive and understood the hardwork of it employees.

    Advice to Management

listen to your employees, trust they understand the complexity of issues at hand.

    Pros

The mission is inspiring, the people are smart, there are always good projects that need doing
    People build skills here

    Cons

Little recognition, salaries are a problem, office politics are messy
Many people can't move up so they move on

    Advice to Management

Invest in high performers, cut the politics, value professional contributions
Give people a real stake in decision making
