I worked at Fairfax Collegiate full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great summer job for teachers and an awesome job for any high schooler or college kid who likes working with kids
    Competitive pay
Curriculum already developed, but they give you some freedom over much you follow it, depending on the class
Every year they institute changes to make things run more smoothly

    Cons

Some tutoring opportunities during the rest of the year, but primarily only a summer job

I worked at Fairfax Collegiate (Less than a year)

    Pros

I greatly enjoyed teaching the subject content of the classes. Many of these subject areas were ones that the students were not exposed to in school, so it was wonderful to see them inspired.

    Cons

Curriculum for many classes was poorly written and some of the equipment was very outdated. Expect to struggle if you are not familiar with the subject area you are teaching. Also, don't be surprised if you walk in on the first day and you are short of some equipment. I ended up not having enough computers for all my students for the first day.

    Advice to Management

Have an evaluation process for material before it is taught. Upgrade equipment more often. Ensure instructors are comfortable with the specific class that they are teaching. The subject areas are so broad, that I can say I am comfortable teaching a science class and get placed in some very specific class I have no familiarity with (ex. lasers).

I worked at Fairfax Collegiate full-time

    Pros

    - scheduled per two weeks, and paid per hour
    - exactly 40hr workweek, very little outside work unless you want to work aftercare, which you are paid at your usual rate for
    - high pay for skill level

    Cons

    - none at present
    - only a summer job so no ability to extend it to a full time position

    Pros

    Properly Structured
    Great pay
    Well Supplied
    They Listen

    Cons

    Not a Full Time job.
They do offer positions for after school classes though the hours are much less than summer.

I worked at Fairfax Collegiate full-time

    Pros

Personally, I enjoyed working for this program more than a typical "summer camp" because it focused on math and science rather than random outdoor activities. Further, as a robotics instructor, I had as much fun as the kids playing with the legos!

    Cons

Expect to be thrown into teaching without any prior instruction.

    Advice to Management

Provide a class prior to the beginning of summer that helps new employees be better instructors.

I have been working at Fairfax Collegiate part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Loved the culture, working with kids, and the focus on making academics fun and helping kids succeed. Fellow coworkers were some of the best I've worked with and fun to get along with

    Cons

Lots of work after the clock ends, warehousing needs improved to get supplies to you, some curriculums are disorganized leading to frustration on the teaching side. However, all these things are improving!

I have been working at Fairfax Collegiate full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Fairfax collegiate is a great place for a smart, motivated college student to work over the summer. For those who show initiative, there are a lot of opportunities to take on additional projects.

    Cons

The management expects you to troubleshoot a lot of problems without training in the classroom. Although the Independence is nice, it is a bit disorienting when you are a new employee.

    Advice to Management

Do a better job of communicating priorities to employees. Also, try to do a better job of providing feedback.

I worked at Fairfax Collegiate full-time

    Pros

They really care about providing kids and parents a great experience -- teachers too. Great work for smart, hard workers. Good teacher pay for experience level (usually college students). Program is constantly improving thanks to good leadership. Passionate kids + inspired teachers + motivated directors = great experience.

    Cons

The leadership expects teachers to be proactive and communicative. This isn't a job for everyone, but is a really unique and awesome employment experience for people who love teaching and working with kids.

    Advice to Management

Continue to improve support systems, curriculum resources, and training. Emphasize the expectations of teachers, especially with regards to student discipline, lesson planning, and preparing materials.
