I have been working at Fairfax County Public Schools full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you are passionate about teaching and helping, there are plenty of needs and kids you can really help.

    Cons

Not much community in large schools, and in smaller schools the community is already set.

  2. "Good place to teach, but terrible compensation and benefits"

I have been working at Fairfax County Public Schools full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

--Great place to teach, but depends on individual school's leadership/management
    --Lots of resources

    Cons

--Compensation is not competitive with surrounding districts
--Teachers don't get paid over the summer, so saving at least $1000/paycheck during the year is difficult (first paycheck during the school year is at the end of September, last paycheck of the school year is end of June)
--Can be challenging to enter the district as an experienced teacher: You need to first complete many PDs or Modules by the county, even if you have experience in that topic/content area

    Advice to Management

Listen to your teachers and staff; advocate for us for better compensation; be open to new ideas from staff and not just do things "The Fairfax County Way"

I worked at Fairfax County Public Schools full-time

    Pros

Pay is decent, garage parking and cafe in the building

    Cons

The operations are run by former, teachers, principals and not people with corporate experience. Processes are outdated, paper driven and managed like a classroom.

    Advice to Management

Hire people from outside of the school system, so the financial situation will improve, the operations will become more effective and efficient and don't be so afraid of new ideas. Change is inevitable...you're a huge school system but lagging behind other school systems in Operations and Technology.

I worked at Fairfax County Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

FCPS is the 10th largest public school system in US. I worked there for 16 years (with one break in between) and I'd work there again. Just left for change in career path. They do well with treating employees properly given the huge size and always limited budget issues. Recently it has improved tremendously and there are a lot of opportunities.

    Cons

It took years for them to adjust pay scales to be more competitive, but have done so recently. Because it's such a large system, implementing curriculum change to be more modern is very difficult.

I worked at Fairfax County Public Schools (Less than a year)

    Pros

Loved working directly with the students at my elementary school. The principal was my direct supervisor, and she was great. I really appreciated how she was willing to help me find a work schedule that would work with my availability.

    Cons

I had a good experience at my school, but because the positions are directly within the schools, a person's experience may be different than mine.
