    Pros

    Great support system for teachers
Students work hard and want to do well

    Cons

Pay tries to meet cost of living standards, but I can't even buy a house with their pay.

I have been working at Fairfax County Public Schools full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The CDS supervisors are always available to answer any questions you have and provide whatever support is necessary. All of the teachers and administrators I've worked with have been kind, flexible and willing to collaborate.

    Cons

Due to the size and "high profile" of the school district, the special education process involves more paperwork, meetings and pressure than some other school districts. The paperwork system is definitely a learning curve, but supervisors do whatever they can to make the process easier.

    Advice to Management

Allow new special education employees quicker access to the online special education system.

I worked at Fairfax County Public Schools full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Teachers have 60 minutes of planning time each day in elementary schools, but it's often taken up with other meetings or team activities. Hard working teachers and involved parents. Supportive administration.

    Cons

Very high parent expectations and packed classrooms (30+) in elementary grades. Salary does not reflect the high cost of living in the area although it is starting to improve. Great health insurance.

I have been working at Fairfax County Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The county does support teachers in professional development and provides many opportunities for growth.

    Cons

The district is HUGE, so some initiatives can feel out of touch. It's easy to feel lost in the sea of schools.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to balance the budget. Teachers need to be paid a competitive salary and feel valued for their time and efforts.

I worked at Fairfax County Public Schools full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great access to technology, further education, facilities, student body, resources

    Cons

Huge, administration-heavy, frequent breaks in step-increases in COLA, stopped funding VA Public School higher education courses for teachers, but did continue to offer Fairfax County teacher-lead enrichment courses

    Advice to Management

Open part time jobs to accommodate teachers who have to stay at home because child-care costs are so high.
