I have been working at Fairfax County Virginia full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Fantastic benefits such as primium health insurance
Great retirement benefits (pre-social security and DROP program)
    11 paid holidays per year
Ample amount of Vacation and sick leave
Can earn comp pay (currently limited with or compensation time for OT work
    Telework opportunities in some agencies

    Cons

Good ole boy network in play and in power across several agencies -Reform minded and smart people whom management feels represents a threat to status quo are passed over for promotion for others who are comfortable
    Very bureaucratic office environments
High cost of living in Northern Virginia.
No real pay raises in 8 out of last 10 years for senior employees

    Advice to Management

Do a blind survey of front line employees on how to deliver services to business communities and constituents cheaper and more effectively.
Needs to do honest assessment of what lines of businesses are critical, needed, offers enhancement to quality of life or are not needed anymore
Hire replacements for managers in DROP retirement program as soon as that manager enters drop. LT transitions would be easier and you won’t have lame duck mangers mailing it in.

I have been working at Fairfax County Virginia full-time

    Pros

The County has quite liberal leave policies. If you have it saved up, you can usually take it no problem.

    Cons

It's very easy to get comfortable in one job, and you have to search for challenges if you have any desire to improve. People are not often held accountable for their work.

    Advice to Management

Task employees with taking on added responsibilities, and push them to improve a bit. Hold employees accountable for their mistakes, and hold YOURSELVES accountable as well.

I worked at Fairfax County Virginia (More than 5 years)

    Pros

My supervisor was flexible and allowed us to telework. She was understanding about the heavy caseloads.

    Cons

Sometimes caseload become unmanageable and management knows you can't get the work done. They tell you to do as much as you can. Maybe human service workers quit because they have 800 case in load. They expect too many admin task instead for us focusing on client and processing cases.

    Advice to Management

Decrease caseloads for workers. Hiring doesn't help because people quit when they realize all they need to do for the pay.
